I work at a great working environment; well at least most of the time. I have been at the same company close to a year now it will be a year June 2. I received this job right after I finished with high school; which is a plus because I go to college and come to work part-time and they are very flexible with my work schedule. I work at an insurance company that provides employee benefits. I bill companies and currently working on a new billing program for the company. Well, I noticed since I been here I have been treated a lot differently from the other co-workers. I just received my garbage can after a year of practically begging for one, but it wasn't a real garbage it was someone's shredder that the office manager stuck a garbage bag in. Well, they did order me one but the new girl received it. I don't have e-mail like everyone else so I have to call for the answers I need and sometime wait longer than 15 minutes to use the phone because my office doesn't not have a phone. I am located in a little storage area with a desk that someone's husband built for me and it is not like the company is going down or anything because one of the bosses just bought him a $500,000 house. Anything I want I have to sometimes buy it on my own like my inkpens, notepads etc. Is it because I am part-time? For birthdays of the employees the bosses takes everyone eat out and pays for everyone's meal, well for mine I had to pay for it. But, it is a real good job that I enjoy doing and it will look real NICE on a RESUME. I am not someone to complain, so I don't I just do what I am suppose to do and carry-on, but lately it has been really getting on my nerves; because they have just hired 3 new employees and they get whatever they request in a day or two. IT TOOK ME ALMOST A YEAR TO GET A CHEAP GARBAGE CAN!! (SHREDDER):mad:

I work as much as a full-time person because they work from 8-5 and 12-1 is lunch so I work late and sometimes during lunch to make up time; that I am at school and I work on the weekends and sometimes I work even more than a full-time person. But I am considered part-time?

Yes, It's cause your part time. They don't see the need to set you up in an office like everyone else if your only working a few hours a day, or a few days a week. Your there to do work that no one else has time to do, but not enough work to justify another full time salary to have done. Basically they want you to cost as little as possible.

When your done college if you choose to go there full time I'm sure they will treat you the same.

This is not one that can be easily answered. Are you the only part time employee? Then yes, that might be it. Also, if you're the only college student, your boss may not think that taking care of you the way that he/she takes care of the other employees is as important. The other employees are an investment, while you, they may think, are a temporary helper. Things might change if they thought you were going to stay on after you get your degree. The fact that you're talking about your resume already suggests that you view this as a temporary job as well. You're only, what, 19, 20 at the oldest? Are you the youngest there? Sometimes being the youngest person at a job tends to make people discriminate against you a bit--try not to take it too personally--acting as mature and adult as possible while on the job may help.

When you need something on the job, it can be very difficult to ask for something without seeming to be complaining. Complaints tend to irritate bosses--learning how to be assertive without being irritating is an art that requires practice. Perhaps a career counselor can help you with that.

There's a whole slew of other possibilities. I can't even begin to list them all. You could say to your boss, "I have a few questions I'd like to ask you when you have a few minutes to spare." Make sure you meet your boss in private--it's less confrontational and your boss is more likely to be honest with you. Say, "I feel like I'm being treated differently here from some of the other employees." State your reasons in a calm and non-accusatory tone. Then, ask if there's something you're doing that is causing the problems. That way, you're making it seem as though you're concerned that you've done something wrong but that you're willing to do better. Accept whatever answer you are given gracefully and thank your boss for his or her time.
