There is a new law in Suffolk County, NY (I'm in Nassau County) that calls for people who are pulled over and found to not have licenses or IDs on them to be arrested on the spot. However, I just saw a news report that a majority of the people that are being arrested are Hispanic. The arrests are occurring in predominantly Hispanic communities such as Farmingville (which is notorious for problems with day laborers and other illegal immigrants) and Bay Shore. In fact, 77% of those arrested are apparently Hispanic. My question is, is there any way to find out what percentage of those PULLED OVER are Hispanic? Critics of this law are saying it's racial profiling and I want to know if it is or not.

A law is not profiling just because one ethnic race happens to break that law more often in one area.

The issue will be if on all the stops made, if any others are not arrested for not having their licese. The issue is they have to be pulled over for some other offense, not just stopped for their race.

And the department will keep racial facts that are not normally public, but available to review by the courts.
