I am on a new med called Niastan 500 mg. for high cholesterol. I have been on it for two weeks and today I feel like my body is on fire and I am all red. I had a bypass 10 yrs. Ago and a stent inserted in my leg two months. Ago. I don't feel right. My MD is not in her office. What should I do?
Thank you very much.

I believe the med you are talking about is Niaspan. Correct me if I am wrong. You say 500 mg.
Hmmm, are you taking any other meds at all, even over-the-counter?

You should probably go to the ER for this to make sure that it is just a side effect of the med rather than a reaction:
Page 720 of Mosby's 2007 Nursing Drug Reference states:
"Teach patient/family:
* That flushing and increase in feelings of warmth will occur several hr after taking drug (PO); after 2 week of therapy, these side effects diminish"

I am supposed to take a new drug for low good & high bad cholesterol, called niastin: what are the side effects of this drug and interaction with levoxyl for thyroid, fexofenadine for allergy, hydroclorathiazide, xanax and lexapro? I had a brother die of liver disease for unknown
Reasons.
Angel, unfortunately I am away from my texts at the moment and dealing with end of life issues with my father. As soon as I return home I will look this up in my references. Hopefully you will have the answers prior to that.
If you find you do not get the answers prior to my returning home (which may be a while), please contact your local pharmacy, the pharmacist will give you any and all info you request on all of your meds.
