View Full Version : How long should I let my cats hide?

I adopted a dog on Saturday. To put it mildly, my two cats are less than thrilled with the situation. They vanished into one of the bedroom closets, and don't want to come out much. That bedroom is where I am currently keeping them while some construction is going on in the place, so it has their food, water, and litter box, and has a gate in the doorway to keep the dog out, so I am not too worried about them. And this morning they were out in the room, eating, drinking, looking out the window. But they go back in the closet when the dog wakes up. Should I just leave them be and let them decide when to come out? Close the closet door while they are in the room, so that they are still hidden but less isolated? There's lots of hiding spots in the room proper for them. I have to admit, I miss them and getting to scritchel them and pet them and... well, just have them around. But I don't want to stress them out more either.

So, any advice?

My cats have always coexisted with my dogs in a satisfactory manner.

Presently I have a walker hound/lab mix and a little barn cat who is three years old. She took to sleeping on 'taffy' every night' on the dogs back; taffy would reach back and lick her, make sure everything was okay, very motherly, taffy was about 7 years old at the time. Nowadays, it is always play time, cat baits the dog, dog chases cat all over the house and back yard, cat normally goes up a tree.

So, don't worry, it will play out okay when they find their middle ground. You just sit back and enjoy the laughter of how they inter act together. As I am sure you have already figured out what will happen down the road. Have a good time !

I figure that they will get along fine eventually. It's just hurting right now to see them huddled up in such a small space. Especially since they used to be with me all the time. And I have to wonder how they will ever get along with the dog if they aren't willing to come out!
