I am replacing a tub / shower in an antique home, with a new one piece shower (60 x 30). I need to connect the drain assembly to existing PVC which is connected to Cast. The problem is the PVC / Cast connection is loose (about 2 feet from the where the shower would drain). The cast is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. I'm worried that if I don't fix the PVC / Cast connection, I will have problems down the road. There is an 18 inch crawl space, but since the shower enclosure is not yet attached to the walls, I still have some access from above.

I have not done much plumbing, and am having a very difficult time finding a plumber who will do the job. I also can't find any information on how to connect PVC to cast drain (the main problem).

Also - any guidance on what do do first would be appreciated. I.E. - should I attach the drain to the tub first and put the whole thing in, or should I put the tub in first, and then attach the drain. How do I make sure the drain will align with the existing PVC. When to drill the holes in the shower enclosure for the supply. Etc. etc.

In order to help we will have to have more specifics. How is the PVC pipe connected to the cast iron at the present time? Does the cast iron pipe have a bell or is it a piece of pipe connected to the PVC by a neoprene coupling?
In your first paragraph you are replacing a tub with a one-piece shower.
However, in the following paragraph you are asking directions on how to trim and set a bath tub? Would this be a misstatement on your part or are we talking about two separate fixtures?
We carefully measure where the drain will be located and position the trap there. We then trim the tub/shower and set it over the trap so the tail piece from the tub/shower drain will line up with the trap. We then connect the trap to the tub/shower with a compression fitting that we have already mounted on the raiser from the trap.
You will drill the holes, (depending on a one handle or two knob valve) at the height you choose. There should be directions and illustrations with the new shower but the average installation calls for the shower valve to be located 48" off the shower deck and the drop eared ell for the shower head to be placed 72" off the shower floor.
