A hernia is something to do with when the mother bites of the puppies umbilical chord but does so too close to the puppy!
It apparently scares over in couple months but I'm worried about it having future problems!
The lady was going to sell her to us for £100 because it can affect breeding, but we weren't going to anyway!

I initially left your question go hoping somebody with more medical training and experience would answer. The more I think about it, the more I wonder about the breeder. None of my puppies have had such a problem, because when they are whelped, the cord is tied off back far enough and then cut. I wonder if the breeder left it to the mother, what else did they fail to do? How carefully have you checked the litter? Are both parents free of common genetic problems in the breed? Was the breeder careful to give the mother space to remove puppies from the nest to eliminate? Failing to do so forces the puppies to live in their excrement and makes housebreaking difficult. How old are the puppies and have they been given a stimulating environment?

I see many questions here and other sites from people wanting to breed dogs that don't have a clue how to do it right. They are asking very basic questions perhaps answered in a general dog book, and surely in even the poorest book on breeding. I don't know if you have the problems with a huge surplus of poorly bred dogs we have her or not.
