For the past 34 years I was married to a wonderful loving man. He passed away just 7 weeks ago. Needless to say he left me with a lot of credit card debts. And I mean a lot.

My question: Since my name was not on these credit card debts and in fact I did not know about most of them until the bills started rolling in, AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THESE BILLS? First of all I do not have the money and second there is no estate.
Can someone give me some insight on this??

Generally you would not be responsible for debts you were not signed on. Just send any bills back unopened marked deceased.

When my mother passed away I received a bunch of bills in the mail. Originally I would just send them back like the previous poster said however they would continue to send the bills over and over like clock work. The only thing that made them stop was personally calling the agency and telling them over the phone that she was deceased and had left no estate behind to settle her final bills with. The only one that gave me a hard time was good old bellsouth who acually were somewhat rude and requested me to send in a copy of the death certificate to get rid of the balance on the account.
