I've tried lots of places online, and thought I'd give this place a shot. :)

Ever since I got a new 80 Gig drive, my Yamaha cd burner/computer hasn't been working properly... I know it still works, and isn't the burner that isn't working right, since the light's still on, and it can open and close perfectly. My computer just doesn't seem to want to detect it, so I can't burn any CD-Rs/RWs. The cd that came with the burner only installs the burning program, but that doesn't help me.

I thought that maybe it had to do with the fact that I had to make a partition, which I named Drive F, since Drive C would only hold 12.7 Gigabytes in total. I guess that's because my computer is getting a little bit old(3 or 4 years or more, I think).

I've already had to re-install XP so many times that it's just tiring and sad now. I'd rather not have to re-install it again, since I have a lot of important information and files on this computer right now, that I'd rather not have to delete.

It's nowhere to be found, but it really is there. I don't know how I can make the computer 'see' it. It's really stressing me out. I really need it to work, and soon.

I've tried all over the net and I've talked to people in person, but nobody seems to be able to answer my questions, and no one knows what to think of this situation...

You said you got a new hard drive. How (physically) did you connect it to the motherboard? What IDE channel did you plug it in to?

So the drive does _read_ discs, so it _is_ detected, is that what you're saying? If so, I really am not sure what your problem is; can you elaborate a bit? Every little bit of information helps, try to be really specific.

I actually had somebody from a Future Shop store do it for me, to replace the old Drive from before, so I'm not sure about that.

What I meant by it installing the program is that the 'Nero Burning Rom' program is installed, only when I load that program, my cd burner isn't listed, only the 'Image' one is there. I installed the program by putting it into Drive D, since it wouldn't read the cd burner's drive. My Drives C, D and F are all fine, but the CD Burner 'doesn't exist' from what my computer is and isn't telling me.

I'm sorry if I'm not making any sense... I just mean that, the cd burner is, in fact, in perfect working condition, but my computer just doesn't realize that it's there. I've tried to get it to detect it, but nothing seems to work for me, and so I'm at a loss for what to do.

Take it back to Future Shop. Its obvious that they did something wrong. The fact that the light comes on and the door opens and closes indicate that the power cable is connected correctly. But the fact that the drive isn't recognized indicates that something was screwed up by the install of the new hard drive. Could be any number of things; jumpers not set properly, drive cable not connected properly, the CD drive may have been damaged, etc.

But the point is that the drive worked until you gave it to them. As soon as you got it home and found the drive didn't work you should have taken it back.

Yeah, taking it back to them was what I had been trying to avoid, since we'd rather not spend more money trying to fix things they may have broken, and this computer isn't really worth spending money on at the moment. I was also trying to avoid opening the computer up myself, since I'm not really qualified for that kind of thing, but I may have to give it a try. :(

Well, considering they didn't do the job correctly in the first place, I'd say you should at least try to get them to rectify their mistakes at no charge.

My question is why you think they would charge you in the first place? This is something THEY broke! If they give you a hassle about fixing it, then you should report them to the better business bureau or similar.

The only issue is one of time. If its been several weeks since you picked it up, they might claim it was working when you picked it up.

I had a similar problem when the light was working on my CD burner and all I had to do wsas re-plug in the cable (big red cable) back into the motherboard. The plug and play automatically detected it and Ive had no problems since.
