I am about to embark on the finalizatiion of a long term marriage, (over 25+years) and my spouse is not working... I have waited for my children to grow up, but the last failure of employment dissolved the marriage. My youngest child is 17 and wants to stay in the family home, as I did. But I left, and now my unemployed husband wants custody and child support. He has not worked for two years and has drained the equity of our home with mortgages and depleted his retirement. My attorney tells me that the court will look at where we are now, rather than when he last worked. My son turns 18 in a few months and is mortified that this is happening and wants to be done with everything. I don't want to drag him down any further, but I expected alimoney, and I am now being faced with a request for chlld support. I have worked for 10 years part time and cannot support myself. I desparately want to have my son live with me, but his alliance seems to lean to his father.
