Hi - I have an old credit card (B of A)debt of about $500.00 that is about 15 years old. I have received a few calls about it still, but haven't answered. I just signed up for a new LL Bean credit card, which I just found out is actually a B of A card. Are they legally allowed to put the old debt on this new account? Thought I'd ask before I accepted the card... Thanks!

If you owe the debt, id say yes. But I'm not a lawyer.

Why are you getting another card when you've not paid off the first? You are digging a deeper hole.

All situations like yours is a case by case basis. Are you sure the debt is on your credit report, and if so, is it the original creditor [B of A] or has the account been sold to a collection agency?

It is possible for an account to be sold to a collection agency, and then be able to obtain another card from the original creditor.

Personally, I would wait to see if you get approved for the card first. Quite possible you will get declined because of the previous debt.

Don't you think you should become responsible for your previous debt before taking on new debt, as mentioned above? Otherwise, you set yourself up to repeat your past mistakes. Just a thought...

Not only can they not put it on your new card but why haven't you paid if off? Why put yourself in more debt? Contact BOA to negotiate the old credit balance and get it paid. Less stress on you if you just deal with it head on.
