Hmm Here a few thinking I suggest. If You are familiar with computer take the side panel off and check all connections and plugs including the ones to the hard drive. If you have had serious viruses in the past, your boot sector files, e.g. system files etc may have been damaged or missing. There ain't many anti virus programs that will run without windows started up so that may be a problem. There also could be a corrupted boot sector file for the device you are trying to start up. It is very unlikely that the drive has crashed, but it does happen, that all depends on how old the computer is. Also you could try a system restore to an older backup of the system files to try and get the computer to run again, this can fix some corrupted files by pressing I think F7 or F8

If any of this fails then place Xp CD in CD rom and do a System repair on the computer, this can also replace most missing and corrupted files on the computer.
