OK, here's a fun little problem whose answer can be surprising -

Suppose you have two glasses of different liquids with the same amount in both - say 6 ounces of red wine in one glass and 6 ounces of white wine in another. Now if you pour exactly one ounce of the red wine into the white and thoroughly mix it, and then pour one ounce of that mixture back into the glass of red wine and mix it, you will end up with two glasses each containing 6 ounces of "contaminated" wine. The question is: after all the mixing which glass has wine that is more contaminated: the one that was originally all red or the one that was originally all white?

Post your answer, but please don't give a math proof for it - at least not yet - as that may spoil it for others...

Errrrrrm that's easy NEITHER.
Well you weren't drinking it so it's all mine.

Here hand me both, I'll taste them and tell you which is contaminated

Both are contaminated the same amount.

Contaminated is contaminated in my book.

They each have the same amount of the other wine in them, though.

A glass of red is good ALK!!

Now, let me taste them and I'll tell you, I like contamination!! LOL

Oh yeah there's a question here.
Well other than me being most contaminated, I'd agree with Alk that the one that was all white is the most now.
But then again I could be wrong so why not refill each and talk me through it again, S L O W L Y this time.

Refill glasses, heck let's just pass the bottles!!

It's a good thing I didn't use scotch and bourbon in this question, or you would all be totally unintelligible by now!

Curlyben

Now you are really talking!!
You'd better not be mixing them with anything but more of the same.

Well you could always pass the Makers Mark Gold Top.

And now back to the question ;)

Well you could always pass the Makers Mark Gold Top.

Don't break the wax

Anyway, I would have to agree that it is the white wine that is the most contaminated.

Eee! Disagreeing with the math heads was never the way to go J_9!

Imagine the situation where you only have 1 ounce in each glass. Now how about 2 ounces in each glass?

I hope you can see that both are contaminated equally.

And the answer is:

Both glasses have the same amount of contamination. So Cap and Nosnana win the prize, which means they have to buy the next round!

Curly - you had it right but then for some reason changed your mind - what happened?

Well a couple of questions first:
Why would you do such a thing?
Is it a nice red or is it some cheapo diesel that you're trying to impress friends with?

Just going to post the math.

You start with 6 ounces in each glass. You move one ounce of red into the white.

The white glass now has 6 ounces white and 1 ounce red. The red glass has 5 ounces red.

Then you move one ounce back. This one ounce contains 1/7 ounce red and 6/7 ounce white. (the proportions that are in the white glass)

So, subtracting this from the white glass we have 6/7 ounce red and 5 1/7 ounce white.

Adding to the red glass we have 5 1/7 ounce red and 6/7 ounce white.

They are both contaminated by the same amount! It's unintuitive until you actually do the math :)

Um I would say that the one that was originally all red was contaminated more.

OK capuchin. The way I dd it it cam eout that the red was more contaminated but whatever.

Can you see a flaw in my working? I'd like you to point out where I am wrong.

Ah, Capuchin. You are mathematically correct. But given that red wine is far superior to white, wouldn't the white glass be 5 1/7 ounces contaminated with only 6/7 ounces of good?:p

Isn't this question from forever ago? I remember this from when I first started I think. ;)

No need to get mad capuchin. In my weird mind it cam eout the red is more ontaminated. Bbut you are probably corredt. I don't wish to work it out write now. I got it wrong. Oh well.
