Unfortunately, you cannot completely get rid of them, but you can effectively control the population. Biting flies, such as black flies, are attracted to carbon dioxide, as mosquitos are. There is equipment sold that will, over time, reduce the biting fly population around your yard. Check your local Loews, Home Depot, or any store where hardware supplies are sold. They usually sell this equipment, such as the Mosquito Magnet and other similar products that are not so expensive. I can state that this equipment has helped me control the population in my yard quite nicely. If you cannot afford to buy one of these units, there are numerous other supplies that these stores sell. You can use a chemical spray that will keep them at bay for a number of hours. Then of course, the cheapest products are deet based products that you apply on your skin and clothes. Not the healthiest solution, but they do work very effectively. Speak to someone at the store about your specific problem, how much area you are looking to control, and ask them to show you everything they have available. The biting flies are a big problem throughout the spring through fall where I live. I have to use a combination of the products depending on the month and the population for any given year. If after you look at the products available in your area, and you still aren't sure of what to purchase, come back and tell us what you have found. We can tell you what you can expect from using those products.

I like the sticky tape stuff that comes in little rolls.Use them in the horse barn and the house. Once they land on the sticky they cannot get away and die. They are cheap also.
