I recently got married and now I am trying to change my name I've been told that I can take is name by dropping either my middle name or my last name but it seems to be a problem that I want to simply add his name to mine. Can anyone tell me why this seems to be such a big deal? An what can I do to rectify the situation. In the state of Georgia there is a section that you write specifically how you want your name to read after you are married in the state of Alabama they didn't give me this option so when I went to get my ga id they said I can't have the name I want?? Is there an alternate means of rectifying this without having to pay extra money to go to court?? And how many women really decide to keep their original names? I am being over untraditional about this?

What's in a name? "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." I guess I may be traditional. I never see the issue in changing my last name to that of my spouse. For one... I don't find my identity in my name. Regardless of my initials, or signature, I am Hugo's wife, and my kids mom, and I am me. I am sure you will continue to be you with whatever name you choose. If it's not a big deal to your hubby, I guess you could just keep your name, but I would go with his, and just drop your name. It sounds like it's becoming a big pain to try and keep both. Good Luck. I live in the State of California, so that might be different. In Europe -where I come from- it is very normal to use your maiden name.

I am using both names... his and mine for simple reason that my name is hard to pronounce.

However on official documents I keep my maiden name.
Until your maiden name is changed on official documents I will officially always be addressed to with my own name.

It's not a big deal for me... after all: I chose to marry him and what's in a name ? :)
For me it's no reason to make an issue out of it, but that is a very opinion.
