I honestly thought this was going to be a slam dunk and now I'm ridiculed amongst my peers. The wires coming from a pipe that is cemented in the ground are not your normal black white ground. There are 2 black and a green. Coming from the pump there are 2 red and 1 gray . The timer has indicated connections for neutral,load and I think the 3rd is line. To top it all off , it was working when I got there and when I tried my first configuration the breaker sparked and the pump made a real bad kind of electrical fryin kind of sound. I made sure the timer switch was in the off position. When I flipped the breaker on, the pump started . I immediately turned the pump to the on position thinking I don't know what which led me to the bad sound and ultimately here.:p :p

I suspect the feed is 240 volts, as is the pump, and sounds like you installed a 120 volt timer, which needs a neutral, and you connected it to the 240 volt feed.

So without knowing any of these details, such as the voltage supply and the rating on the timer, where do we go from here?
