I have a Hunter ceiling fan, it was installed about 8 years ago. The fan has 2 pull chains, one for the light and one for the fan as well as a direction switch all located on the fan body. Recently the switch at the wall has been acting up, turning on by itself and off by itself, especially during storms. In the last week the switch stopped working entirely. The switch has an on-off control as well as a button to cycle through 3 levels of fan speed and a different button to cycle through 3 levels of light. I went to Home Depot and purchased a new switch that does the same, on-off and controls the light and fan separately. I also purchased a remote so that I would be able to control the fan without going to the wall switch. I bought a Hunter All-Fan Ceiling fan remote (27185) and also a Hunter ceiling fan/light wall switch.

I went to replace the switch last night and discovered it had only 2 red wires coming from the back of the switch. The new switch is a 3 wire and I am not sure if that can work there. I looked for a similar 2 wire switch this morning but can't seem to find one. Another thing about the existing switch is that it is in a 2 switch electrical box however I have never been able to determine what the other switch operates. It is wired but where it goes I am not sure.

My question is can I use that 3 wire switch for this fan and if so how is wired? If I am going to use a remote should I even bother replacing the wall switch and if not, do I just pull it out and cap off the hole with a new plate? Any suggestions are welcome.

No, you need a wall switch/receiver combination, not a 3 wire switch. This switch will have two wires. But I doubt there is anything wrong with the old switch. More likely you need to change the frequency on the switch and receiver.

Thank you for the response. I have no idea of how to change the frequency - there does not appear to be anything on the switch to change.

Follow the link I gave you. It will be somewhere on the back of the switch. The receiver will be inside the fan's ceiling canopy.
