I know nothing about computers... so I'm sorry if my question sounds dumb lol.
I got a laptop in January, on windows vista home premium.
For me personally it wasn't a good experience. Nothing was compatible with it, I couldn't view most videos as the player I needed wasn't compatible, I really missed windows xp.
The laptop had 1024 ram and 100 gig hard drive.
My partner knew how much I hated vista, and yesterday he presented me with a new laptop on windows xp as an early birthday present.
I love the new laptop and I am so happy to be back on xp.. but, it is very very slow compared to the old one,it has 256 ram and 40 gig hard drive.it was the only laptop he could find on xp now. Could I take the memory/ram out of the old one and put it in my new one? Or do they have to be specific ones? I'm a bit lost.. thanks

It depends, some laptops (like DELL) use a specific type of memory, with a different shape!

If you can easily access the memory (usually on laptops it will be under a screwed-down compartment) then have a look and compare them, if they are the same type, then go for it!

Unless your laptops are under warranty, then you may want to get the shop to do it so as not to invalidate them!

Your partner would have done better by buying you a copy of XP which you could then install on the new laptop.

Frankly, I have had very few compatibility issues with Vista.

I like Vista but have had to keep my old PC with the Xp because allot of the hardware stuff, (camcorder, digital voice recorder so on) won't work with Vista. I personally believe this is more the fault of the device manufacturers for not bothering to make patches. Many of them don't seem to care, they just figure they will update the next model. But I also wonder why he didn't buy a copy of xp and put it on the new PC. I think you could actually run both.

I forgot to mention before in my erlier post, the other reason he got me the laptop was because my older one has some damage to the keyboard as well, makes it hard to type on it, so that was partly a factor for him too, plus we were planning on getting it fixed and giving the old one to his parents, thank you for the replies :-)
