Ok this is my short story to help you understand what I'm trying to ask. I am 23 years old. I have 3 children 1 passed away due to SIDS. My husband and I decided for me to get an IUD. It has been in for a year now. I have had normal periods until now. Lately I spot a brown colored blood for a day two at most. This has happened for my last two periods. I also have gained about 10 pounds in the last month! I have changed my eating habits started exercising and taking natural diet pills and just keep gaining!! I don't understand it. We don't use protection since I have and IUD. My belly doesn't look fatty it looks like a baby belly. My weight gain is only my belly and breast. I took a home pregnancy test and it was negative. Which when I was pregnant with 2 of my children I had negative results until I had a blood test done. I don't understand what's going on. I don't have medical insurance and can't afford to go to a doctor so I am puzzled and at a stand still. If anyone has any ideas on what's wrong or what to do PLEASE let me know.

I didn't have any insurance and the best thing to do is find out if there are any clinics in your area to go to , most are free and if not, theyl refer you to some place that is, it defintiley is an emergency. IUDS usually last like 8 years if I'm not wrong, so the bleeding shouldn't occur. Hope this helped..

I understand how it is to not have insurance, its rough. However, in your situation, you really need to find a way to get to the doctor asap. If you are pregnant, you need to get the IUD removed immediately, before it is too late to take it out. IUD's can cause serious problems during pregnancy for you and baby, so its really in your best interest to get this checked out and soon
It could also be that the IUD has moved, or is causing irritation, etc. No matter the case, it is a good idea to get checked asap. Good luck

There are free clinics in almost every city and state depending where you are try to research and find one.

Make sure to take care of yourself, because if you are preganant, you need at least 9 months of service.

I'm not sure what state you live in but most have health insurance specifically for uninsured pregnant women. To get the test, contact your local health department. Their test is free. Explain that you always get a negative result with the urine test and you may require blood.

For my own sake I hope your results are negative. I don't want to believe it's possible to get pregnant with this thing inserted. I have been searching the web for info because I too have the mirena but I just don't feel right lately. I am going to get a test tomorrow.

Good luck.

Sweetie I am answering you on my daughters membership.

I have had my second mirena device fitted and have clocked up some 11 years.

With my 1st I had very little or no bleeding for a few years and then bleeding on and off.

With my 2nd I have not had as little bleeding, but the spotting of brown blood is quite normal(its quite like the loss after childbirth) I have also increased in weight around the tummy and breasts(due to hormones on the iud) I have had an increase in mood swings and in period like pain.

There are as yet no recorded pregnancies with the mirena iud fitted.

But I should pop along to a clinic for a little checkup and a chat just to put your mind at rest.

And god bless xx

It's is possible but not likely to get pregnant w/ Mirena. After one year, many women have no period and only spot occasionally due to the hormone in the Mirena.

It IS possible to get pregnant with the IUD It happened to me, although I miscarried due to the IUD and meds I'm on for my other health problems. This isn't always the case. You can look up, there are many other sites with info on this. Google works wonders. Believe it or not pregnancy with an IUD is more common then you may think. Also the IUD can move around or even fall out. Check your strings every month like your doctor "should" have advised. As for feeling differently that's what happened to me but I didn't think much of it because I did the same as you and asked a question online and got just about the same answers. My test was also negative and I didn't know until I actually started showing. I had tender breast, morning sickness, craved sweets which I hardly eat, I felt weak and tired all day, headaches, pretty much all of the sings I had with my son. I didn't believe it was possible so I didn't get it checked out. Instead I got the symptoms checked as they popped up, the doctors were puzzled as to what was wrong with me. Never tested for pregnancy. After a while I couldn't resist the urge I broke down and bought a home pregnancy test, worried I waited my 2-3 minutes and it came up negative. I didn't give it much though after that until my belly got bigger and firm. Then I did my internet research again and found that it is possible to get pregnan.t After all the IUD are not 100% they are 98% like a condom. So yes if you suspect that this may be the case go to your local health department and get tested. The doctors will tell you that you should either get an abortion for health reasons or you can try to keep the baby, which you have about a 75% chance to miscarry during the 2nd term, painful and emotional... but that's not always the case many women have had healthy babies with the IUD. It isn't always removed either depending on where its located. It may be safer for you and your baby to keep it in if you decided to keep the baby. If you are pregnant its considered a high risk pregnancy. So go to the doctor to be sure. One last thing, ectopic pregnancies are more common with the IUD then normal ones so its very important you go to the dr. ASAP.

Hi, I just found this site.. and I thought I give you my experience.. I often look for this topic because when I WAS PREGNANT with my third child with the MIRENA IUD there were no many sites I was able to go to. I don't know if you are pregnant.. and by now I am assuming you have gotten your answer.. but I want to tell you that it is VERY possible to get pregnant while using an IUD. I had my MIRENA IUD fitted, and ended up pregnant about three years ago. I had had my IUD for about two years when I discovered I was pregnant.. my prognosis.. was not certain, and I was terrified that I would lose the baby, or that something would happen to me. I can tell you that the entire time I was pregnant I was very worried! and very depressed.. I can also tell you that I visited the ER many times because of complications of the IUD.. however I was blessed and delivered a healthy baby boy. I was just reading an a lady had posted that there are no recorded pregnancies with the IUD and I am sorry to tell you that , that is NOT true! Many , many woman have gotten pregnant, and many have lost their babies, uterus, and sometimes close to dying do to infection. It really bothers me that such a statement can be made with absolulaty nothing to base it on! I know the company knows of this cases.. they know of me! And I can tell you that IUD are not as effective as thought to be. I would never recommend it , and I wish whomever had it would consider the consequences. I was lucky and blessed, but unfortunally that is NOT always the case. Good luck

I had the Mirena inserted about 4 yrs ago, and just recently noticed my period was not the same. I spotted briefly. I just bought a pt and it came up positive. I am in such turmoil right now. I never thought I would be one of the .01 percent that ended up pregnant.

Hi I'm a mother of 1 Im on Mirena also I took a are you pregnant quiz hoping to god I would flunk and its telling me to get an at home test because I have most of the signs for early pregnancy I'm scared to death. The first time the doctor put it in he ended up riping my cervix and I was in pain for a good two weeks. I went to the ER and they found possibly cancerous Cycst on one of my overies and divarticulitous (pockets in my colon). The OB at the ER recommended that I have the IUD placed immediately until the doctor could find out if I do have cancer or not. They still haven't found out and I might be pregnant. I can't even go to work with out throwing up. Someone please help me. How am I going to tell my husband that I got pregnant while visiting him on vacation (taking care of 2 grandmas 1200 miles from home) I have my little boy with me but I'm so tired all the time I need help.

I too have had my Minera for 4 yrs and recently I do feel pregnant. I did have some spotting in the beginning but not since in years; and all of a sudden I've spotted this week. After reading that pregnancy is possible I am getting a test tomorrow, now that I have read the posts about how dangerous pregnancy with IUD can be! At first I didn't even bat an eye at the varied symptoms, but lately I just can't ignore them anymore! After all, I have been pregnant before and that's the only time in my life I can remember feeling sick & hungry at the same time... until recently! Yikes!

It's possible. My aunt over two decades ago had a tubal pregnancy and got an hysterectonmy. Her fiancé and her were delighted until they found out it was tubal. I don't know what she was thinking about when she knew she had the IUD still there. Anyway, they wound up breaking up because she wanted him to be able to have children.

I came to this site because I have Mirena. The reason why I have not gotten pregnant is because I had been celibate. I don't think any birth control could control me from getting pregnant.

Anyway, one time and I'm having symptoms. Things taste different. Can barely stay away at work. Nauseated after eating. Breasts swollen. Squeezed the nipple and out came milk. (sigh) Told my boyfriend to get an EPT. I just lost my job so I'm temping making 6 dollars less an hour. Facing eviction. Denied unemployment. Enough of the crying.

Anyway, I know what being pregnant feels like. Will get a blood test now after speaking with... I mean reading all of your responses.

I'm 42, diabetic, too many risks to have a baby with IUD, etc.

But everything will be all right.

Hi,
I don`t really have an answer for you but I`m in a similar situation. I have suspected pregnancy for 4 months now. But every test I have taken come back negative, even a blood test ( however I just found out that some meds can reduce the hormones) Anyway I not only feel pregnant and have all the symptoms of my previouse 2 pregnacys I also have a belly that's getting bigger every month. I can barely fit into jeans that sliped down 3 or 4 month ago. My growth is all in the frount of my belly, I`m thin everywhere else. I just started gaining weight. Also I have a line forming down my lower belly, my belly botton is poping out and I`m even feeling movement. It mostly happends when there are loud unfamilar noises, I ajdust my clothes or scratch my belly. I know what kicking feels like and it just doesn`t feel like gas. I don`t what to think and its driving me crazy.. espisally now. I was a week late for my period ( still been getting periods) then I had my iud removed, I just wanted it out. That day I got a terrible stomach ach in my upper abdoman.. the next day I started bleeding, now its very heavy ( soaking a reg tampon every two hours) but I`m still feeling movement and having no pain..
I do know it is very possible to become pregnant with a IUD, I know two people in fact, and they gave birth to healthy babies.. one even left her iud in the whole time. One girl ( unsure if she used birth control) had her period for 5-6 months and got negative results on pregnancy tests.. untill finally it was confirmed. I hope everything works out for you, my gyno thinks I`m crazy but its seems as thought I`m really not.

Now ,I'm in 2.5 months pregnancy with IUD , the dotor couldn't take the Iud out, because it pushed up too high . Then I dicided to keep this baby ! I feel so sick these days (vomitting)... I'm so depressed ! I don't know what will happen later when it's getting bigger and bigger day by day

Poor mom.

One more thing that, my ultrasound said that the Iud was very close to the uterus (not sure this word right , I mean the baby), it like touching... The doctor said the baby was healthy ,it was OK. My case was steel called :"high risk ",that is the thing I worry about .

Hello, I' am 25, have 2 boys, and have been using the mirena for approx 3yrs now. My sis-in-law has been using it for about 1&1/2 yrs. Her situation has been totally diff than mine, I have been getting normal periods (not as much as I used to before the mirena), but still have been getting it every mth, unlike my sis-in-law her menstruation stopped and a few days ago she had unbelievably strong pains which got her to think that she might be pregnant, so she did 2 PTs which came out + there was a risky possibility that she might have it on her tube which according to her physician it could cause death in 20min or so if her tube were to burst so she immediately head to the dr for an ultra sound, luckily it was a false pregnancy; interesting huh! Well the reseason for the + tests and the strong pains were because her tubes were swelling because of the missed pd. And that caused her uterus to send + and sometimes unsure results to PTs although she is still on risk of a pregnancy because she is still obvulating. I thought it was necessary to share this with all of you because I thought it was interesting to know since most of us using the UID (mirena) have so many doubts about pregnancies w/ mirena. Good luck to all of us!
Oh, 1 more thing it's April 25th and haven't gotten my period, I am now starting to worry. Although I haven't experience any symptoms, my worries are still there just hoping for the best.

I have had the mirena since April this year 2009. I've never been on any other form of birth control other than condoms at all in my life. I thought my iud was out of place but not sure. I do have insurance however, I'm scared to go find out. I have a miscarriage in 2007 and I don't know if I can bare another one. I have a friend on mirena who had 2 misarriages, so I am flipping out. Plus I am on medications that I'm not suppose to take while pregnant. So I'm scared. I already have 2 children. One is 3 and one is 5 months old. I'm single and I don't know how to deal with this. I took a positive pregnancy test Friday. I drank that night too. I feel horrible and I don't want to go back to my doctor in fear that I have risks. Which I already know do. :( I'm waiting it out. I don't want to get my hopes up and I'm scared to have the iud removed.

Goodness, now I am really getting worried. I have had the Mirena IUD in for a little over three months now. When I first got it inserted I bled for about 4 weeks, went to the doctor and was told that this is "normal." I stopped bleeding for about 9 days, than started again for three weeks. Stopped bleeding for about 2 weeks, than bled for about another two. Than I stopped again about a week ago. But since than I have been very nautious and have thrown up twice! I am feeling cramps around my uterus. Could I be pregnant? Has anyone else had this similar experience?

I am in the same spot as you are! I have had it for about 2 yrs now. I had some spotting for like a day or two and than nothing since. I have been feeling sick to my stomach and weak. Sore breasts. Craving chocolate (which I don't normally like to eat) and having some cramps and more vaginal discharge than usual. The white milky looking discharge. I have taken 2 tests both have been negative. I am right now looking for the free clinic in my area because I have 2 other kids and just know my body!

Hi, I am going through the same thing right now. I had my mirena placed after I gave birth to my first child.. that was in oct for two months after that I had a light period then it just stopped, now for the last month I will bleed heavy one day, stop for two days, do it again, I didn't think anything of it till I started feeling nausea and now I am noticing that my belly is getting hard at the top like it did for my daughter, I have an appt tomorrow to get it checked out.. I have taken 4 pregnant. Tests, all negative so I might just be thinking too much, who knows but I heard it is seroius if you are pregnant with it in so I am going to be responsible and check it out... also they told me to search for my strings to feel them, I felt 3 times, I didn't feel anything, so mine could have fallen out, I will let you know after tomorrow.
Good luck

Hey sweetie I know how you feel I'm going through the same thing right now. I have been on the mirena IUD for about three or four months now. I look like I have a baby belly and my boobs feel very heavy and their sore all the time. I spooted for a day or two it was a funny color. I've been having these pains/cramps in my lower stomack. I took a home pregnant test twice both of them where negative. I talked to my friend she's had an IUD in for almost 3 years now. She told me that you can get pregnant with an IUD because nothing is 100% and that the hormones in the IUD might mess with the pregnant test. So if you could wait a couple weeks then take another one if that on comes out negative then you might want to go see a doctor if you still feel the same. Right know I am trying to get in to see a doctor to see what's wrong with me. (I can't even find my strings)

Hello again, so as I stated before I said I was going to see the doctor today because I felt pregnant, my tests were negetive at home, and I couldn't find my strings... so I went. I still have my iud in and no I'm not pregnant. She said the mirena will mess with my hormones, and as far as my stomach being hard, she said it could just be I am pregnant, but I feel better now knowing. She also said there is no way I could feel my strings because my cervix is really long, so that might be your case if you were trying to feel for them and could not. I hope everyone is helping you with your thoughts. I would still go to the doctor set your mind at ease.

Good luck

I had the IUD for 9 years everything was OK, but it has been 15 days that I don't have my period, I had nauseas but not everyday, with my second pregnancy it happened the same, I was reading the posts it really scare me just thinking I could miscarriage, well this baby was not in my plans, but like I said a baby is a bless from god, I'm studying right now (was not in plans like I said before) my second child is 12 years old. Do you imagine to start over again? The first one is already 15 years old, I didn't want to have more children two were enough. If I confirm that I pregnant well, it is true that you can get pregnant while the IUD is inserted.

I have had my IUD for 2 years. I have had no periods with the IUD in place -
I feel pregnant - cramping in my pelvic area, some nausea/fatique but not major fatique...
I took 2 home tests - they were negative - blood test from Dr also negative (all within 7 days) -
I have a hard time figuring out the best time to test due to no periods ----> WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ME??

I have had my iud in for about a year my daughter (she is my youngest) is only 15 months. I have been feeling out of sorts as well and decided to take a test. Actually I took two of them and both were positive. I go to the doctors this afternoon. Obviously this was not a planned pregnancy. I say the iud's need a lot of work.

I would just go some were like plannedparent hood and ask for a blood test because I took a home pregnancy test and it was negative too but I'm going today to get the blood test just to make sure. I've have not had a period since April of 2009 and I have taking more then 5 pregenecy test and they all came up negative and I called the doctors where I had it put in and they sad that if I take a pregency test and it comes up negative it means that I'm not pregent and I don't have to worry about it. I got the mirena in on oct. 2007. I don't know what to do.

I have had the Mirena for about a year now. My periods were kindof out of wack at first, then leveled off, now for the past week I have only spotted and cramped. I have been very emotional, but that could be due to the holidays and the family members I lost this year. I am really starting to freak out after reading all this because I have 2 kids of my own, and 3 step, yes 5 total! I wasn't planning for any more, but also don't want to miscarry if I am pregnant. This is unreal.
