I live in California and I would like to know if I give up my Parental Rights, do I still have to pay child support? Or can anyone come back onme later for it?

Thanks Neil

Yes, you still have to pay. Instead try to form a relationship with your child.

Thank you for coming here for advice Neil.

This is most likely our most popular question on this board. And in very easy answr yes you havve to still pay child support.

Giving away your rights ( unless you give away the right to allow a new partner of your ex to adopt) so if your ex has a new partner who wants to adopt, you can give away your entire obligations and rights)

But if this is not the case, if you merely give away your rights, ( right to visit, right to have a saw about the child) that is all you give away, the other parent or the state if they collect any assistance, can always come after you for support.

So no you don't have to visit or have anything to do with the child, but you will have to send that check.

If you sign your rights to your child over then that means you are not legally entitled to the child anymore. So no you would not have to pay child support. Are you on the birth certificate because if not they cannot make you pay anyway. If you sign them over then no more child support but I do not know about back child support if they are doing DNA like now to see if the child is yours then if it comes back yours and you sign your rights over you won't ever have a dime come out of your pocket. In my state if the DNA comes back positive they make the father pay the DNA. Hope this has helped you. But why would you want to sign your rights over if I may ask.

This question comes up at least once every day, and the general conciseness is that unless the child is adopted by another man, you will still have to pay.
