We just moved and we brought or whirlpool washing machine with us. We never had any problems with leaking in the past, but now there is water all over the floor. I discovered that water is partially running out of the drain hose instead of draining down the standpipe.
I'm not sure if anything else is connected to the same drain line, but the washer is the only place we are having problems (the sink and dishwasher drain just fine).
The standpipe appears to be about 2" wide.
I've searched the boards and found a couple of answers (one of which involves snaking through the roof- WAY too big a job for me) but I'm not entirely sure I understand. Can I buy a small household "amateur" snake and see if this clears the line? If so, what size do I get? Thanks in advance for your help.

Home depot has that mini sewer machine for 150 bucks.

Or you could purchase a 3/8ths inch hand held snake for much less money. Send it down the stand pipe and work your way around the trap. Once past the trap you will hit a sanitary tee and a bend at the base of the stack, Past that is the drain line. Put out about 10 or 15 feet more and flush by cycling the washer.

If you don't find your blockage with the rod you could try a home brew cure. Mix 1/2 cup salt with 1/2 cup baking soda, dump down the stand pipe and then follow with a cup of vinegar. Wait about a hour and flush with hot water. Soap and lint make a great plug and this should break it loose.
