I am a freelance designer so my job takes me everywhere. Last summer I worked in MA. I am a resident of CT. Do I need to file a tax return for MA as well? I have reported it on my federal return using turbo tax and it did not warn me that I need to fill MA as well. If I need to file MA, do I file it only for the sum I earned there or I will end up being taxed double on whole income.
I guess the main thing is : do I need to file 1099 misc in a state I am not resident of?
I hope I make sense

Legally, if you earned the money while located in Massachusetts, then you should file a Massachusetts tax return for the money earned in Massachusetts, along with a Connecticut tax return (since the state you reside in normally stakes a claim on all of your income). Connecticut then gives you a credit for the Massachusetts taxed paid.

That said, how much money are we talking about? It's very possible the money you made in Massachusetts will be less than the state's personel exemption and standard deduction. If that's the case, filing a return is a waste of everyone's time and effort!

Give me a dollar amount for the 1099-MISC overall and how much in Massachusetts and I can give you more definitive guidance.
