I am in need of a subpanel because Im adding runs for a finish attic with 2 15amps. And down the road a basment. But looking at my panel I have a air condition 2-20 amp breakers, my guess is a 240v for the ac. Well I am not using that run any more due to central air. What can I do to convert that to a sub panel. Run 10-3 or 8-3 to the subpanel and go from 20 amps to 30 or 40. Let me know.

Thanks,

Really depends on the size basement, the smallest I would suggest is a 40 amp subpanel, but for a small basement. Knowing how rooms tend to grow, and with the cost of copper wire, I would use #2- 4 wire SER aluminum cable if the room would be used as a family room, with electronics and computers, heaters, or workshops, etc.

The existing line is probably only #12 so pretty much useless unless the space is only good for cold storage.

Is Conduit an option? I live where aluminum cannot be used, They make wafer breakers
Where 2 circuits fit in one space. So with 2 pole breaker removed, you now have 4 circuits.
Don't forget TV and tel wire.

Conduit is always an option, so no problem. Use PVC, it is cheap ,and easy to install.
