Well, it has a magnetic field which is similar to the field produced by a bar magnet:

The hard metal inner core at the center of our planet rotates in the surrounding pool of hot liquid metal. That core stays hard because of the high pressure at the center.
The rotation creates an electro-magnetic field that surrounds the entire earth.
