While cutting my yard for the first time this season I found hundreds of small holes in my yard. It look like small bomb craters. There were hundreds of them. I have a 4 acre yard and you can imagine how many tiny craters I have. I found out it was armadillos. It seems to be a whole extended family of armadillos. How do I get rid of them. I can never catch them out at night where I can shoot them. They are destroying my yard.

Aren't there cages that you can get from the local humane department? Then they can take them to a safer place for them to live. Poor armadillos-they are just trying to make it in the world. Why would you want to shoot them? I understand having holes in your yard is a pain, but there are better options.

The first thing you need to understand when you have critters digging up your lawn
Is that there is "something" living in your lawn that is providing a food source for them...

That something is usually Japanese Beetles and white grub, but it could be any other insect as well.

You probably don't realize it because the critters are there feeding on them every night which keeps the population down.

You will need to treat the cause.
Killing the critters won't work because new ones will just discover that your lawn is a great feeding ground - same goes for trapping.

You can call a pest control company (one that does both animal removal and bugs).
You can find them in the yellow pages.

They will set traps out to catch the critters and treat your lawn to kill the bugs that are attracting them...

That is pretty bad but man I wish I could see an armadillo in real life
