What kind of pipes can I use to connect the hot water supply in my shower other than galvanized or copper? Thanks

You can't use PVC, it won't take the heat. CPVC is almost as cheap and just as easy to work with. Look for the cream colored stuff next to the PVC. There is also PEX and I am seeing references to the polybutylene that I thought the lawyers ran off the market.

If you are retrofitting, you can transition from the copper to plastic with a Shark's Tooth fitting or a CPVC compression union. If you use the union, you need to secure the pipes so they can't slip out. Either avoids soldering a female pipe adapter onto the copper. Ball valves are more reliable for stops than gate or globe valves.
