Stop when I try to engage deck

The key to getting a good answer, is to provide some details with your question. I can only assume that you mean the engine stalls when you engage the mower. Did you attempt to turn the mower belt by hand when it was disengaged? Is it free spinning, (no binds). Also does the engine die instantly, or does it load down and then stall ?

Sounds like safety switch to me. Thomas

Could be frozen blade spindles or idler pulley, I have seen them packed with wet grass and do the same.
