Sorry, I have no advice for you, but I'm glad to find someone to relate to. Here's what I posted on another website:

I am 19 years old right now, but I am considering the possibility of adoption after I turn 21. I have been looking into different places that offer that option versus the standard 25 year old option. The option is available, although not as easy to find. I would be adopting as a single parent, which will make things more difficult. Does anyone have advice as far as dealing with adoption biases related to specific conditions? I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years ago, and although my medications have been stabilized and I have been doing pretty well lately, I am concerned that it might be a problem if I decide to adopt. I am good at caring for children, and I know that individuals with bipolar disorder are capable of caring for children, if only for the fact that my mother has it too and she raised me well. Some difficulties, but a success story.

If you find out anything, please let me know. I live in Maryland, but I'm interested in adoptions in multiple locations. Thanks.

My husband & I would like to adopt. I have bipolar disorder & my husband has minor depression. Both illnesses are under control. Has anyone had experience with trying to adopt when the parent/s have mental illness? What do you do?

Thanks.

I know of a few people who have adopted under these circumstances, both married and single people. Most of them went out of the country to china though.

I, too, am bipolar and will be married in May. My future husband and I are also considering adoption. My fiancˇ currently has a 11 year old ADHD son. Anyway, I actually have been doing some research on this. Apparently, because of the american disabilities act, they can't discriminate against us simply because we have bipolar disorder. I would recommend contacting the organization that deals with disabilities.

Why are you having trouble finding an agency to work with you? That could be a red flag. You may want to speak with a family lawyer about this and to explore possible options.
