Recently, my heat pump has started to make a clicking noise when it is turned off. The clicking is about one second apart and is continuous. I thought that it was one time occurrence, but when I checked after a day's time, it was still clicking. The thermostat is switched completely off. Thoughts?

Mine has starting doing the same thing... we've had our entire air system off for over a month now, due to the nice weather. But now that it's starting to heat up here in Texas... we need the AC on now! Basically, when I switch the T-stat over to cool, the outdoor unit and the t-stat both are in a state of continuous clicking. No clue what's going on. My step-father's been in HVAC for the most of his life, and suggested I just talk with my warranty folks (our homes <1yr old). It is an upgraded t-stat, but my step-father ensured me the unit was hooked up correctly from diagnosing each connection with a voltemeter (over the phone).. I'll let you know the outcome of my visit from the warranty folks. Sounds like our problems are near identical.

I ended up figuring out the mess myself. The warranty folks claim I've voided my warranty just by installing a new T-stat... well the problem ended up being the "Safe-T switch" which monitors the drainage reservoir to the outside. I bypassed the switch, and the AC turned on. Now I know that it wasn't the t-stat's problem. I was pretty heated when they told me my warranty was crap because I upgraded from a cheapo mercury t-stat.

You may be hearing the reversing valve coil. Its energized in the cooling mode(most units) even if its not running.Is the system working OK?

What type of equip. do you have? I deal with lennox and trane everyday and have never had a problem with them on warranty as long as we prove that it has been maintained... it sounds to me like the company you are dealing with is feeding you a line... I agree they may not be able to warranty the stat because you changed it yourself , but that shouldn't hurt the rest of the system. There is no way for the manufacture of the equip. to know that you changed that stat, I think I would fight that.

It makes you love the insurance people that much more or not.

The company I'm dealing with is Christianson Plumbing & A/C. I've got no clue if that's a known name or not, but the weekend on call guy I spoke to today was saying all the "voided warranty" crap. Even after I told the guy I connected the Red/Yellow/Orange/Green wires that the AC didn't turn on, he claims I voided it... But whatever, glad someone cleared up to me what the name of that condensate float switch is. Next I was suggested to make sure it's draining correctly though... and it is...

I would talk to someone over his head at the company, I just don't buy that. I'm sure you paid for that warranty and you should get it.
