:confused: I have a 3 month old Cocker Spaniel, and he keeps eating his own poop! He mainly does it at night while we are sleeping, so I can't watch him to tell him not to do it. He even brings some of it to his bed with him!! What can I do to get him out of this gross habit? :confused:

I have had that problem with a number of puppies. I work at cleaning it up before they have a chance at it. You can add stuff to their food to make the stools unappetizing. Try pineapple juice, canned pumpkin, or commercial materials, Deter or Forbid. However stomach turning it is for the owners, it doesn't seem to hurt the dogs much. It does make cleaning up a worm infestation harder.

It may be time for a diet change. Lack of protein, among other things, can cause this strange phenomena(Coprophagia), usually puppies like cat poop and frozen poopsicles[sic].

Diet most likely is the cause of the problem, but most commercial dog chows, especially the puppy chows provide what is best for the dog. Solving a problem often out grown by feeding too rich of a diet isn't best. Too rich of a diet can acerbate genetic tendencies toward hip dysphasia. Better to control the problem other ways than end up with a dog limited for life by poor joints.

No one diet is right for all dogs. Most dogs will thrive on most commercial commercial chows. The first step in correcting any diet related problem is to make sure nearly all of the dog's calories comes from a commercial diet. In a few cases, the dog may do better on a different brand and different protein source.
