Trump has completely muffed the Greenland thing. If the goal was acquiring Greenland and there is a certain logic in the idea (see the CCP attempt to get an airport in Greenland which they withdrew from 2019 )
Chinese investments in Greenland raise US concerns | DIIS (https://www.diis.dk/en/research/chinese-investments-in-greenland-raise-us-concerns)
They withdrew from the offer during Trump's 1st term.
Instead of his strong arm approach he should have had dual diplomacy 1st convincing Greenlanders it was in their interest and then negotiating an honest deal with Denmark. A little diplomacy was in order . Danish and Greenlanders having a say and a seat at the table was probably all it would've taken
The comparisons to the 1867 Alaska purchase is amazing. The US even after the Civil War carnage emerged as a major power ;close to the Brits . Russia sold it to us because they feared being surrounded by the Brits and Euro coalitions. (they had been humiliated in CRIMEA by the Brits and France ) . They were willing to give us Alaska over the potential of the Brits getting it( Alaska was the only thing separating the Russians from the Brits in Canada .)
So what happens if the US gets Greenland ? Same situation . The US and NATO completely surround Russia. Add in the Crimea comparison it is uncanny.
Russia claims the Ukraine war is a war against NATO. Wednesday NATO "reinforced" Greenland with NATO troops . Russia immediately said that NATO presence there is a threat to Russia
"The situation unfolding in the high latitudes is of serious concern to us," the Russian embassy in Belgium, where NATO is headquartered, said in a statement published late Wednesday.
NATO is "building up its military presence there under the false pretext of a growing threat from Moscow and Beijing," the embassy added.

All of this could've been avoided with smart diplomacy.

It was the dream of Russia to break up NATO for years . Despite NATO and Denmark willing to work with the US for the defense of Greenland Trump is taking a dangerously reckless course. It is my hope that SCOTUS will rule to restrict the President's power of tariffs that the Constitution gives to Congress.
Sweden and Finland are important recent additions to NATO . They joined because of the Russian threat but now a clear threat has emerged from within the alliance.
He is threatening separate tariffs for NATO nations that participated in a joint NATO exercise to demonstrate their commitment to the defense of the island .
Trump hits 8 U.S. allies with tariffs in push for Greenland deal (https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/trump-denmark-european-tariffs-greenland-deal-rcna254551)
The countries he threatened with tariffs are all part of the EU which means they will be extended to the entire EU . Does he really want that trade war when affordability will be the issue in the 2026 campaign ?
This threatens all the trade pacts he made in Europe last year like the British paying more for medicines .

This is now insane .
Trump reportedly texted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre ,linking his desire to get Greenland to his being snubbed by the Nobel Committee .
“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."
Nick Schifrin on X: "NEW: @potus letter to @jonasgahrstore links @NobelPrize to Greenland, reiterates threats, and is forwarded by the NSC staff to multiple European ambassadors in Washington. I obtained the text from multiple officials: Dear Ambassador: President Trump has asked that the" / X (https://x.com/nickschifrin/status/2013107018081489006?s=20)

Trump must thing that the EU is going to bend over and take it
Thank You, Sir. May I Have Another? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jyz8PTWReWo)
The EU as a combined economy is formidable . They have an instrument in their arsenal called the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI) that they like to call a "trade bazooka" .
Protecting against coercion - Trade and Economic Security (https://policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/enforcement-and-protection/protecting-against-coercion_en)
Adopted in 2023 ,it seeks to prevent the very economic strong arm tactics that Trump threatens. It allows for sanctions ,boycotts ,and other trade restrictions against third countries . It was originally designed to counter Chinese trade bullying . But now they are considering adopting it against the US
Already under consideration is a 93 billion Euro tariff against US goods that was delayed because of trade talks that began in July .
They had an emergency meeting yesterday where French President Emanuel Macron suggested the trade bazooka be deployed .
Adopted in 2023, the instrument has never been used, but the US president's escalating threats over the weekend prompted calls for the instrument to be deployed, including from French President Emmanuel Macron.
France and Germany push to use EU anti-coercion tools if Trump's new tariffs become reality | Euronews (https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/01/19/german-vice-chancellor-weighs-deploying-eu-anti-coercion-measures-against-trump)
The EU implemented its trade agreement with the Trump administration last summer, but it hasn’t yet signed the accord. Although some leaders, including Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, supported the deal because it avoided a significant tariff escalation on both sides, many European leaders decried the agreement when it was announced, and Trump’s latest salvo puts the deal in doubt.
The European Parliament’s Manfred Weber said on X, that “given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage” for a US-EU trade agreement.
“These actions really do represent an end of the credibility of American commitments. That’s going to have adverse effects on the world economy,” said Steven Durlauf, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.

President Xi Jinping could treat the actions of Trump, and Putin before him, as an invitation to be another bad boy and escalate claims against Taiwan and others.
Beijing may also opt to play a longer game and claim the moral high ground, however, presenting itself as an international norm-setter, a global economic powerhouse that values global supply chains more than new flags in the ground.
In a world where the United States is starting to go rogue and Russia has already done so, Europe may have to start talking much more seriously to China, whether it likes it or not.
Europe Faces the Gone-Rogue Doctrine | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (https://carnegieendowment.org/europe/strategic-europe/2026/01/europe-faces-the-gone-rogue-doctrine?lang=en&utm_source=carnegieemail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autoemail&mkt_tok=ODEzLVhZVS00MjIAAAGfepEjEnaZvVutZAMbgqjSS3 TNTJ05yvAh1UF8DxB3XVh5OK31FMYtjDdaPnIVjeLmrd-1XomHdzv5oZtJ5OEjoOacAdEa7X_XRPx3U69NAxu9)

Tariffs in the end is still a tax on the people . The markets know this .
Trump claimed exporters would absorb the tariffs, butGoldman Sachs research indicates that U.S. companies and consumers collectively paid 82% of the tariffs in October 2025. Furthermore, Goldman estimates consumers alone will bear 67% of the cost by July 2026
Trump said tariffs would bring manufacturing activity back to America, but the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) says U.S. manufacturing activity has actually contracted for 10 consecutive months.
Trump said tariffs would create U.S. jobs, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the U.S. economy added only 584,000 jobs last year. That means, apart from the pandemic in 2020, the jobs market is weaker today than it has been since the Great Recession.
Unfortunately, investors recently got more concerning news about President Trump's tariffs, and the timing is especially bad, because the S&P 500 is sounding an alarm last witnessed during the dot-com crash.
Here is the big picture: Trump has reignited the trade war with Europe, which bodes ill for the U.S. economy. Federal Reserve researchers recently reviewed 150 years' worth of data, and they arrived at this conclusion: Tariff hikes raise unemployment and lower GDP (https://www.fool.com/terms/g/gdp/) growth.

Well well . Trump playing 'art of the deal ' ruled out invading Greenland . I wonder what he got in concession ?
I get it . China has declared itself a 'Near Arctic State' . That leaves them they claim rights to resources under the LOST (Law of the Sea Treaty .)
As you see by this map they are not . None of their border is on the Arctic
https://www.clingendael.org/pub/2020/presence-before-power/2-presence-before-power-why-china-became-a-near-arctic-state/images/figure-2.png
....as explained in the PRC’s White Paper released this January, the new context of fast changing climate and environment, the opportunities in the Arctic are multiple. Indeed, in terms of the economic potential, scientific insights (establishing weather patterns in light of the change in world’s climate), biodiversity, sea routes, untapped natural resources, as well as the strategic footholds it could grant, the region is of clear interest not only to the Chinese government but to many stake holders. The possible benefit of linking its shipping lanes to the North Atlantic through the region places China at the forefront of Arctic development.
As such, China has developed its own term of classification to link its relations with the Arctic: “a Near-Arctic State.”
The Ice Silk Road: Is China a "Near-Arctic-State"? - Institute for Security and Development Policy (https://www.isdp.eu/publication/the-ice-silk-road-is-china-a-near-artic-state/#:~:text=Factually%20speaking%2C%20China%20is%20no t,or%20water%20in%20the%20Arctic.)
China is rapidly expanding its icebreaker fleet and Arctic presence, leading in recent construction and deployments.
That puts Greenland in the cross hairs of the great power game . The Chinese and Russian presence makes the area a strategic importance to the US ;almost equal to the Gulf of Mexico .
But instead of shoring up alliances ;Trump is bullying our allies .(see Trump pushing Canada into Chinas orbit which is as big a strategic blunder as I have seen in my lifetime. )
I hope this declaration ruling out invasion is the first sign that someone got through his thick skull.

Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The reality is this . Greenland has a population the size of which could fit into an NFL stadium. But they have a land mass greater in size than Texas and California combined. They could not defend the island themselves if they wanted to.
When there was no logical passage through the Arctic it was largely ignored except for it's strategic value of an early warning system.
Denmark clings to colonial possession even though for more than a half century they have tinkered around the edges of Greenland sovereignty. Greenland is currently home ruled by a party in favor of independence.
