Well that would be because local officials side with the criminals

Flashback June 1963 JFK sent troops to Alabama when the Governor refused to enforce the law and sided with those who blocked attempts to enforce desegregation laws .

SECTION 1. The Secretary of Defense is authorized and directed to take all appropriate steps to remove obstructions of justice in the State of Alabama, to enforce the laws of the United States within that State,....
SEC. 2. In furtherance of the authorization and direction contained in section 1 hereof, the Secretary of Defense is authorized to use such of the Armed Forces of the United States as he may deem necessary.
SEC. 3. I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of Defense to call into the active military service of the United States, as he may deem appropriate to carry out the purposes of this order, any or all of the units of the Army National Guard and of the Air National Guard of the State of Alabama to serve in the active military service of the United States for an indefinite period and until relieved by appropriate orders. In carrying out the provisions of section 1, the Secretary of Defense is authorized to use the units, and members thereof, called into the active military service of the United States pursuant to this section.
SEC. 4. The Secretary of Defense is authorized to delegate to the Secretary of the Army or the Secretary of the Air Force, or both, any of the authority conferred upon him by this order.
JOHN F. KENNEDY

This weekend Federal officers were attacked in Chicago . Instead of assisting them ;the Chi-town polices were ordered to stand down .

As ICE officers were being surrounded a their vehicles rammed by the mob ;they asked for assistance. But the police were ordered to stand down as police were initially responding to the dispatch .

“Per the chief of patrol: clear everybody out, we’re not responding over there.”

The Trust Act is an Illinois State Law that generally prohibits local law enforcement agencies in Illinois from participating in immigration enforcement. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS,) ICE agents have faced a 1000 percent increase in violence since the start of the year. Government officials in Chicago, which classifies itself as a sanctuary city, have repeatedly pushed back against ICE operations, leading to a breakdown of local and Federal cooperation.
“The number one unwritten rule in law enforcement is that we respond to any calls from officers in distress,” Southwood said. “What would have happened if the local police were facing threats and nearby federal officers were told not to assist? Whether you agree about immigration enforcement or not, when a law enforcement officer is in trouble, nothing should stand in the way of fellow officers rendering assistance.”

In the incident ,a women armed with a semi-automatic weapon tried to run the Ice officers down when they were fleeing their entrapped vehicle. She was shot and killed

Trump initiated 'Operation Midway Blitz' in response to Guv Pritzker's refusal to assist in immigration enforcement . Is there a difference between what Pritzker does and what Wallace did in the past ?

In Portland ICE is similarly under siege .Antifa has essentially taken over the city area near ICE HQ . They have to physically force their way out of the building to do their job . People who live in the neighborhood are in a hostage situation . When they try to leave ;their autos are surrounded . Police tell them they can't offer any assistance.

Residents are suing the city because they are subject to Antifa flaring horns and sirens all night long.

results are in . According to self described conservative and frequent critic of Trump, Andrew Sullivan ,((who contributes mostly to liberal publications ) ; he says he owes Trump an apology.

Turns out that enforcing the law makes cities safer (who da thunk it ? )
Speaking of Trump's use of National Guard in DC he wrote;

And then,as I came back in October, I had to eat my harrumphs. The city felt instantly different: calmer, quieter, saner. In the park, the fountain wasn’t turned back on, but the quiet there had become as contagious as the previous din. It was ten days before I was accosted by a mentally ill homeless person on the street – something that was a daily occurrence before. It was a month before I heard the first boombox disturbing the peace.
The data backed up my impression: violent crime fell by 50 per cent, compared with the same period last year; robberies were down 35 per cent. Clearance rates for homicides hit a ten-year high. Sixteen children died by gunshot in D.C. in 2023. This year? Three so far, all before the troops arrived. All it took was a symbolic show of military authority and the atmosphere dramatically shifted.

SCOTUS threw a monkey wrench in Trump's plan They refused to end a temporary restraining order that prevents Trump to deploy the Illinois National Guard to Chi-town.

In an unsigned letter they let a temporary restraining order stand saying the administration has yet to "identify a source of authority " allowing Trump to take the action.

25A443 Trump v. Illinois (12/23/2025) (https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/klpyjblewvg/25A443%20Order.pdf)

3 Justices ,Alito , Thomas and Gorsuch wrote in dissent that regardless of one's opinion of Trump's immigration policies ;it is imperative for him to protect Federal ICE officers doing their job from attack

This is the 2nd time in 2 months that the courts have blocked Trump . November a judge in Portland permanently blocked Trump from deploying the guard to that lawless city .

Pretty impressive results. "According to Asher's Real-Time Crime Index (https://realtimecrimeindex.com/) (RTCI), the United States is on track for the biggest single-year decline in murders ever recorded — a striking reversal after the COVID-era crime surge."

SCOTUS says Trump's use of the national guard to enforce the law is unconstitutional.

The simplest terms is that a President can't mobilize the state National Guard unless the President is unable to enforce the law with the military or as the court calls it "regular forces " .
10 U.S. Code § 12406 - National Guard in Federal service: call | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/12406)

BUT the military cannot be called for domestic use.

18 U.S. Code § 1385 - Use of Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force as posse comitatus | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1385)

before the President can federalize the Guard under §12406(3), he likely must have statutory or constitutional authority to execute the laws with the regular military and must be ‘unable’ with those forces to perform that function

25A443 Trump v. Illinois (12/23/2025) (https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/trump-illinois-order.pdf)

In other words ;the States are tasked with enforcing Federal law (or in the case of where they were deployed, the ICE and DHS officers who were completely overwhelmed by "mostly peaceful protest" .)

In the 3 cities involved LA ,Chitown ,and Portland the Guvs had no intent on enforcing immigration law. I would argue that they are acting unconstitutionally ;and in rebellion by openly declaring their jurisdictions "sanctuaries" and the President has every power to suppress rebellion militarily .

Now for the politics of this ....... I think this plays right into Trump's hands . He can demonstrate how effective his use of the Guard was in crime reduction. He can campaign that even in cases where it was clear criminal illegal aliens were being that local Dems actively refused to cooperate. And it nullifies the silly argument being made that SCOTUS is a rubber stamp to Trump's agenda.

Trump announced he will comply with the SCOTUS ruling for now. Watch the crime rate sky rocket again in those cities.

I'm afraid you are going to be right about that, and the poor will suffer the most. We sure failed miserably in putting together a Supreme Court that had some sense.
