What is a parent who has traditional values....a traditional Catholic ;an Eastern Orthodox Christian ;a Muslim to do when their child's elementary school has the following books in their curriculum ?
' My Rainbow ' is about an autistic child who proclaims to be a transformer girl. The mom gives the child a rainbow wig to wear.
My Rainbow- Read Aloud (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MAiz9olE2U)
'Born Ready' is about a girl who tells her parents she's a he.
📚 Kids Book Read Aloud: Born Ready (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TQ-pW10VT8)
Teachers were given guidance on how to address children who questioned the weirdness of the stories ;basically telling them they were being hurtful.
Can parents request an opt out ? No . The decision of the Montgomery County Maryland district was to not inform parents when the books would be read.
Well now SCOTUS will have to weigh in
Issue: Whether public schools burden parents’ religious exercise when they compel elementary school children to participate in instruction on gender and sexuality against their parents’ religious convictions and without notice or opportunity to opt out.
Mahmoud v. Taylor - SCOTUSblog (https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/mahmoud-v-taylor/)
The district argues that if parents have a right to opt out of this then what prevents them from opting out of other topics of education like math and science? They say public schools cannot possibly accommodate such variables .
Huh ? What is ESL ? What about education for the disabled ? I'm sure an educator could come up with other such examples.
The school board said it’d be an impossible disruption if teachers had to “send out notices so white supremacists could opt out of civil-rights content.”
Opinion | Supreme Court weighs religious freedom vs. educational diktats - The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/04/18/supreme-court-public-education-religious-freedom/)
Comparing religious parents with white supremacists tells you all you need to know about their attitude.
