Mahmoud Khalil (https://substack.com/redirect/7b67f861-84ee-4970-82c3-a2cc5bca51b3?j=eyJ1IjoiMWV0Y29iIn0.nroxoFSmrO8Ercw 5ZonmUf3udKNsBsAQnQSV30l0J2s) came to the US in 2022 He became a green card legal resident in 2023 after he married Noor Abdalla, an American citizen . Then he earned a masters degree at Columbia U

Then Hamas attacked and massacred 1,139 Israelis on Oct 7 2023 , Israel attacked Gaza in retaliation . American colleges generally rallied to the Hamas cause. Protests at Columbia were particularly violent and intimidating against Jewish students ,

Khalil was the agitating leader of the protests at Columbia U. even though he rarely actually participated in the "mostly peaceful" protests .

1st question is if he had mentioned his radicalism would he have gotten a visa in the 1st place ? Well yes . The policies of the previous administration were clearly anti-Israeli.

The question being debated however is what rights does Khalil have as a legal permanent resident ?

Jan 30 Trump does an EO

To all the resident aliens who joined in the pro-jihadist protests, we put you on notice: come 2025, we will find you, and we will deport you. I will also quickly cancel the student visas of all Hamas sympathizers on college campuses, which have been infested with radicalism like never before.”

Khalil was arrested March 9

(1) Homeland Security on X: "On March 9, 2025, in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism, and in coordination with the Department of State, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student. Khalil led activities" / X (https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1898908955675357314?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email)

(he was actually taken into custody March 8)

His defense is that this violates his free speech .
Does it really ?

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson weighed in on Marh 11.

If you are on a student visa, and you're in America, and you're an aspiring young terrorist who wants to prey upon your Jewish classmates, you're going home. We're going to arrest your — tail, and we're going to send you home where you belong.

Then the "mostly peaceful" student protesters hit the streets of NYC .

Did his agitation end up in denying rights to other students ? Does free speech mean you can take over buildings; prevent students from attending classes ,harass, intimidate or bully them ?

Generally green card holders have the same rights as citizens ..... but not quite . The 1952 ' Immigration and Nationality Act ' does make provisions for deportation.

(C) Foreign policy(i) In generalAn alien whose presence or activities in the United States the Secretary of State has reasonable ground to believe would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States is deportable.

8 USC 1227: Deportable aliens (https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title8-section1227&num=0&edition=prelim)

Hamas has been designated a terrorist group . Khalil agitated for Hamas against Israel ,an American ally.

I'm the first to admit that this is not a black and white case. Reasonable people can make the case that a legal resident has absolutely the same rights as a citizen. But I believe the law is on the government's side in this case.
