He was not a great President . But he tried . His party was dominated by the likes of fat Teddy the swimmer . In comparison he was conservative. He got my vote in 76' . But then his Presidency was a failure.

He did get some things right that we all should consider. The deregulation movement largely began with him.

Airline Deregulation Act - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_Deregulation_Act)

Motor Carrier Act of 1980 - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_Carrier_Act_of_1980)

Staggers Rail Act - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staggers_Rail_Act)

Even President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 Economic Report of the President highlighted the inadequacy of the federal budget in measuring the full complement of resources directed towards federal government objectives. While noting a regulatory budget is not problem-free, Carter’s Report recognized factors even more relevant in today’s public policy landscape, so is worth quoting at length:

Until recently efforts by the Federal Government to promote social goals relied principally on direct expenditures. Since 1921 the Congress has required that these expenditures appear in the Federal budget. The budget process allows explicit tradeoffs to be made and the appropriate level of government action to be debated. But as more goals are pursued through rules and regulations mandating private outlays rather than through direct governmental expenditures, the Federal budget is an increasingly inadequate measure of the resources directed by government toward social ends.
As a result, proposals have been made that the Federal Government develop a “regulatory budget,” similar to the expenditure budget, as a framework for looking at the total financial burden imposed by regulations, for setting some limits to this burden, and for making tradeoffs within those limits.

He began the reform of gas regulations .

In retrospect ,I am not sure he could've possibly done much better given the Dem interest group and Congressional opposition led by the likes of the swimmer ;who in the end sabotaged his chances of a 2nd term.

If I told you today that a Dem is running on the platform of deregulation ;fiscal restraint and putting sunset clauses on legislation you would think I was joking.

Imagine a Dem saying this today .

We need patience and good will, but we really need to realize that there is a limit to the role and the function of government. Government cannot solve our problems, it can't set our goals, it cannot define our vision. Government cannot eliminate poverty or provide a bountiful economy or reduce inflation or save our cities or cure illiteracy or provide energy. And government cannot mandate goodness. Only a true partnership between government and the people can ever hope to reach these goals.
Those of us who govern can sometimes inspire, and we can identify needs and marshal resources, but we simply cannot be the managers of everything and everybody.

Not much difference between that and Reagan saying government was the problem.

Yes his presidency was a failure . But that was mostly because he had to fight his own party ;dominated by the likes of the radical lefty Teddy Kennedy (compared to him ;1972 Dem candidate George McGovern was a centrist ) . Ted was the leader of a very large lefty coalition (even more radical that LBJ ) who ascended to Congress in the wake of Watergate .

Carter was an outsider .He did not outright promise to drain the swamp. But he did have a reform agenda. He just failed at it.
He inherited the economy that LBJ left Nixon ;and Nixon being a New Dealer himself could not fix (also Nixon was handcuffed with the primary mission of ending the Vietnam war).
But Carter left the seeds in place for the Reagan revolution. Ideas like lower taxes were crafted by Carter in 1977 ; passed in 1978 .
Tax Reduction and Reform Message to the Congress. | The American Presidency Project (https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/tax-reduction-and-reform-message-the-congress)

Eventually Reps Kemp and Roth crafted similar cuts that Reagan signed in 1981

Under Carter trucking ;rail roads ,airlines ,natural gas ,and communications were deregulated .

Much of the inflation that did him in was caused by Fed Reserve policy under G William Miller . Much of the taming of inflation happened because Carter replaced him with Paul Volker .

Carter was pro-military and reversed the trend of declining defense budgets after Vietnam.
He was hopelessly naive regarding his belief that there could be an accommodation with communist regimes. He learned his lesson when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan .

He failed to recognize the role that radical Islam would play in the future.

Despite his many foreign policy failures , he had a major achievement in bringing peace to Egypt and Israel ....a peace that lasts to this day. His emphasis on human rights was a mixed bag. But it did help set the stage for the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.

He tapped into conservative religious advocacy .He was a moral man . Looking back ;his scandalous admission that he sometimes commits adultery in his heart is quaint comparted to many of our public leader's morals today. America would be better off if more people adopted his personal and family values.

His post Presidency is labelled as a success because of his good deeds. In many ways it was . His charitable work was outstanding. Some of his diplomatic interventions were productive.

But there are a few things that undermine the work he did before and after his term.

First and foremost he became of voice of hatred against Israel. He wrote a whole book accusing them of apartheid. His efforts there were one sided against Israel.

Second ;his interventions in North Korea led to the failed 'Agreed Framework ' that the Norks routinely violated to a point where they are essentially a nuclear power today.

His Panama Canal treaty is a problem we are dealing with today .

And of course his handling of the hostage crisis became the template for future hostage takings by radical Islam.

He was also one of the first presidents to be solidly pro-abortion, at least in the sense of not being prepared to do much to stop it. It was similar to someone claiming to be pro-Jewish and yet not thinking we should have done anything to eliminate the Nazi death camps.

"I think abortion is wrong. I don't think the Government ought to do anything to encourage abortion, but I don't favor a constitutional amendment on the subject. (In other words, we shouldn't do anything to support it, but we shouldn't do anything to prevent it either. J.L.) But short of a constitutional amendment, and within the confines of a Supreme Court ruling, I will do everything I can to minimize the need for abortions with better sex education, family planning, with better adoptive procedures. I personally don't believe that the Federal Government ought to finance abortions, but I draw the line and don't support a constitutional amendment. I honor the right of people to seek a constitutional amendment on abortion, but I won't actively work for its passage."

Clueless Joe made incoherent mumbling comments about Carter . Afterward a reporter stirred up or tried to stir up controversy by asking Joe what lessons Trump could learn from Carter .
Joe used the opportunity to smear Trump . He just could not leave politics out of it for a day

Joe responded

"Decency, decency, decency. … Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone who needed something and just keep walking? Can you imagine Jimmy Carter referring to someone by the way they look or the way they talk?"

Guess what else . Carter never pardoned a family member for influence peddling

Carter did not lie about it .

"I am deeply concerned that Billy has received funds from Libya and that he may be under obligation to Libya. These facts will govern my relationship with Billy as long as I am president. Billy has had no influence on U.S. policy or actions concerning Libya in the past, and he will have no influence in the future.".

Joe lied about Hunter and then in the end pardoned him for all crimes he committed and may have committed .He did those things because, no doubt, it was the decent thing to do.

I spoke of the failures of Carter post Presidency diplomacy Those included his irrational hatred of Israel to the point of siding with terrorists ;his ushering in the NORK nuke .

I forgot one and maybe more. 2012 The Carter Center went to Venezuela to monitor the elections that dictator Hugo Chavez stole . The Carter Center conclusions was that "the election process in Venezuela is the best in the world "

Carter funeral today. It occurred to me that Carter could not control inflation. Clueless Joe CAUSED inflation. Carter failed to free hostages. Clueless Joe does not give a d*mn about hostages .

Carter was a far better President than Joe. The debate I am having is if Joe is the worse ever. It is close between him and James Buchannan. Buchannan sat and did nothing as the nation broke apart . Joe did his best to break the country and he even failed at that.

We two lonely inhabitants of AMHD both agree about Biden, and his final few days only served to cement that opinion.

Joe's eulogy of Carter served as a reminder about how decent a man Carter was ;and the large contrast to Joe's despicable character

Text of President Joe Biden's eulogy from the state funeral for Jimmy Carter | AP News (https://apnews.com/article/jimmy-carter-president-biden-eulogy-ccf9d465ff5e2f662571630c732df7da)

The contrasts in their Presidencies are glaring.
Carter inherited the issues he dealt with . Joe created his and made them worse.

Carter took on both parties in Congress. Joe took on the Repubs and tried to criminalize them. Then he genuflected to the most extreme in his party.

Carter promised to never lie. Joe never told the truth.

Carter admitted mistakes Joe deflected blaming others or covered them up.

Carter was a patriot selflessly serving the nation. Joe ran a crime family that traitorously peddled his influence to the highest bidder ......often enemies of the nation. He promised to not pardon his son .Instead he not only pardoned him from crimes we know of ;but also other crimes he may have committed .

Carter worked tirelessly at the end ensuring a smooth transition and the return of hostages . Joe is working as tirelessly as he is capable of to undermine the incoming administration .

Both Carter and Joe promised to heal the nations wounds . Carter tried . Joe picked at scabs and tried to criminalize all opposition.

Carter is accused of micromanagement . To this day no one can say for sure who has run the country in the last 4 years . All we know for sure is that it hasn't been Joe.

Carter worked hard at everything he did....graduate from the Naval Academy ;serve in the Nuclear submarine fleet ;farm ;Georgia politics ;President ;and for many years after did good works.
Joe skated through life found a way out of serving in the military;has been feeding out of the public trough his whole adult life and cashing out on his influence.

Carter was brilliant having helped develop the nuclear powered Navy . Joe is generally recognized as the dumbest man in the room.

Carter left office trusting history to judge his legacy. Joe has been nonstop trying to shape a legacy that is not there or is mostly negative .
