It is what you want it to be...
For some, it is nothing more than a style of self presentation using "dark" clothing, jewelry, and personal flair.
For some, it is a "costume"... something they can use to hide behind.
And for a few, it's a lifestyle expression of hatred - either within, or at the world at large.

Goth is a stereotype for people who wear a lot of black and listen to heavy metal. Its really been a popular subculture. To me they are just people, and I don't appreciate how people can make judgements on the way people dress. Sure I have a lot of "goth" friends but I'd rather call them by there name. People think stereotypes are definition but the only people who can really define anyone is themselves. I hate stereotypes, they make people question themselves. And this "goth" is just that, a catergory for people who are to lazy to get to know the real people.

First of all as far as my opinion goes, how I define Goth is the love of the darkside of the supernatural, and all that stems from that. Of course that is a very subjective definition. And most people that I know of that are into Goth wouldn't actually term "the darkside" as such.
However that being said, Wikipedia has a great Goth Subculture page:
