The statue of limitations in my state is 6 years. I receieved a letter from a collection agency saying that I owe $2600. On a car that was reposessed in September of 2000. I do plan on writing a letter of validation, but why are they trying to collect? Can they still try to collect even though statue of limitations is passed and car has been reposessed?
Any advise is welcome
Thank you

The statute doesn't prevent them from trying to collect, they just can not force you to pay. Do not agree to make a settlement or offer to pay one penny, that restarts the statute. That is what they are hoping you will do.

Yeah I got one recently that was 12 years old. Any contact made with them will only encourage them. (They don't even know that you are still alive.)
What usually happens is that they monitor your credit file for activity and a soon as they get a "hit" they know you are out there. Shred and forget.
