A few days ago, out of the clear blue sky, all my private passwords and my password to
Paypal appeared in a box near the top of my screen. I have no explanation for this.
I was wondering... if I change my AOL passwords, what will be effected.

Wish I could help, but when it comes to things like this, I'm useless. It would be a concern for me as well. Passwords are supposed to be secret, and of course your computer records and remembers those passwords, but for those passwords to appear in a box on your screen, I'd be concerned as well. Sadly I don't know why it happened, and it's never happened to me.
I hope someone comes along that can answer your question.
Whenever I have computer issues I'm told to clear my cache. 99.9% of the time that advice does the trick. Perhaps that's something you should try? Not sure though. Wish I could actually be of help here, but I have no answer. :(

Do you use a Password Manager? Do you allow your browser to save your passwords? Was there any title to this box?

I save passwords on paypal and Facebook but mostly I have to sign in for
Everything else. I had my computer completely overhauled right before
This happened. He said I didn't have to change my passwords... I'm just
A bit uncomfortable with it.

Sounds like you may have a key logger. What virus protection do you use?

Microsoft Defender? Its not bad, but given what happened I would download Malwarebytes and use that to scan your system.

Scott, I'm so technically challenged that I dare not take a step without
My computer guy. I can ask him though. I don't even know the meaning
Of scanning my system...
