Hi!
My front load washing machine occasionally has water (1-2 gallons) in it even though it has not been in use. I suspect the bathroom shower/tub upstairs may somehow be leaking water (draining) into the machine when it receives heavy use. Is this even possible and who should I call, a plumber or a repair person for the washing machine? I would appreciate any information.

Well, my initial thought right off the bat is that you could test your theory by filling the suspected tub with water, add a couple of drops of food coloring, and then drain the tub. If the water showing up in the washer is colored, then you have your answer. ;)

Although I suspect it may be a leaky solenoid (that's the valve(s) that lets water into the machine). You can test that particular theory by turning off the supply lines leading to the machine for a while, and see if it fills anyway. If it doesn't, it's the solenoid(s), or some other part of the machine - either way, it would be out of the realm of plumbing, and into the realm of appliance repair.

Let us know if you require any further assistance. :)

Good luck!

I really don't see this as a possibility.

The water would have to travel through a p-trap, sneak it's way past a 1" drain hose that is loosely fitted into a 2" riser, travel up the "U" in the top of the drain hose, back down the drain hose that exits at the bottom of the clotheswasher, through a check valve and centrifugal pump before entering the tub of the clotheswasher.

 Doesn't seem too likely.
