View Full Version : Diverter Valve only leaks when shower is on

Hello... I am having a strange (to me anyways) problem with my tub/shower valve. The valve works fine when running water through the tub spout. No leaks. When I pull up on the tub spout lever for the shower, water starts leaking out the diverter. At least that is where it seems to be leaking out from. I can see and have some access to the back of the tub where the valve is. I have a two handle system.

Thanks for your help in advance...

Simple repair! Replace the tub spout . Tub spouts are cheap and easy to replace. Take the old spout in to a hardware or big box store and ask for a exact replacement. Good luck, Tom

Thanks Tom... However, which I did not mention earlier, the spout is brand new. Are there different types of these spouts that act different? This is an older valve. It is a two handle system, one for cold and one for hot. I have replaced the stems with new ones.
Any other ideas or any other information I can provide?

Thanks again... Frank

Hey Frank,

Then you got a faulty spout or a piece of mineral buildup got in the diverter and is preventing it from closing. I would return the spout and ask for a replacement. The age of the tub/shower valve has no bearing on the spout.

Hi Tom,

I have replaced the Tub Spout with another new one and still have the same leak. Could there be a crack in the valve where the water goes up to the shower? It only leaks when the water is diverted to the shower head... and there are no leaks in the copper tubing/fittings going up to the shower head... Only way to see the tub/shower valve is to remove some drywall and unhook it from the pipes...

Thanks,
Frank
