Of course I am so last minute... anyways, my payroll company messed up my W2 and I need help figuring out what info is right and wrong on here. (They will not be able to get me a correct W2 until after the tax deadline.)

I work in NJ and live in NYC so I have two W2s and I am told my NY w2 is wrong. It looks like something minor but if someone can confirm...

My NJ W2 has numbers reported in boxes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 16, and 17. While my NY W2 only had numbers reported in boxes 16, 17, 18, and 19 - meaning I have no federal, ss, or medicare tax withheld on NY. Is this normal?

Also, on my NY in "w2 Summary" they are subtracting something called "Less Not Subject" from my gross pay and using that number in box 18 under "local wages tips.. )

Help!

I know this sound too easy but, getting an extension is as easy as filling out the proper form. They will give them to anyone who ask.

Your federal withholding, social security and medicare withholding is the same for any state as is stated in box 2, 4, & 6. That money goes to the federal government. That's why it is not repeated on your state wages. The wages that are reported in NJ gets reported on your NJ state return and the wages that are reported on your NY w-2 is so that you will have a w-2 to send in with your NY state return. That's why you have (2) w-2'. Just so you'll have one to send in with your federal, state and local returns. I'm not sure what "less not subject" means. I'm not sure where you see w-2 summary on a w-2.

Mobea has covered this critical issues.

Understand that NJ adds items to the NJ wages as taxable income that is NOT taxable on the federal level, so the Box 16 wage will be different than Box 1.
