I have a 2000 chevy malibu Someone must have hit my right headlight.
The glass encasement is loose... the cover over the headlight is lying in
Pieces but the light works.

My mechanic said it would cost $100 to replace and about $100 in labor
Said it would take bet 1 and 1/2 hr to repair.

Am I being ripped off or is this what it usually costs?

Sounds like they gave you a rough estimate of parts and labor. Maybe a bit higher, but nothing out of the ballpark. If you buy the parts from a GM wholesaler online, you can get them a bit cheaper. Labor can cost anywhere from $45/hr-$120+/hr depending on where you live. Posting a link for your GM parts. If you use your VIN # when searching for parts, the online price may cost less.

Wow... I thank you so much for your thorough reply. Living in NY then, I guess
$100 for labor is not that unusual... I couldn't figure out from the parts which one
Covers the lightbulb inside the outer headlight protector so I'm still not sure of
The cost... but I think I'll go to him anyway. Again, many thanks for your
Timely and complete answer.

That's not a bad price considering there is most likely taxes in there too.. Part is $100, labor seems a bit high but depends on where you are located. A part like that may be found in a junk yard but even then you'd have to remove it and reinstall.

It depends on the way the car is setup. On my wife's 199 Buick Century you can't replace just the bulb. You have to replace the whole headlight assembly. In some cases, this may mean removing the battery or other parts to pull out the assembly.

But guess what... I went to the post office and my car wouldn't start. GEICO
Truck came, jump started it but felt I had another prob and sugg I go to my
Mechanic which is where my car sits at the moment... the headlight goes on
Just the covering is broken and the outer heavier glass is loose but now it's
Priority-time. GEICO guy thinks it's misfiring... and sugg a new battery...

Anyway, thank you for getting back to me

Did you hear they are putting a 70+ story apartment building near the Barclay Center? That's "too high" even for Brooklyn ;)

Apparently nothings too high for Brooklyn anymore... you should see the
Rents and cost of housing... when my landlord sells it's going to be hard
To find a reasonable rental anymore.

That's why the price for repair. So true... but I still have
A hard time thinking of living in the country somewhere...

See if you can get into a Mitchell-Lama Co-op like Luna Park.

I just got back from Atlanta. Was down there 2 days for a business conference. Barely got out of the hotel.
