Walt needs to buy 12 bags of soil to landscape the area around the flowers. If each bag of soil costs $5.95, about how much will Walt spend on soil?

With the time you spent to post this you could have easily figured it out. A X B =C

Let's put it a different way.

You want to buy 12 chocolate bars. Each chocolate bar costs 65 cents. How would you figure out how much it will cost before tax if you live somewhere where they don't apply tax like they do where I live.

12x0.65.

Same with your question.

The equation is 12 x 5.95.

All schools that I know of don't even expect you to figure it out on paper, just use your calculator. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I suck at math and even I can figure this one out.

What grade are you in?

If they only want an estimate, and you do say in your question "about how much", not "exactly how much", then you can easily figure it out in your head by doing 12 times 6. That will give you a higher estimate of what Walt will need to buy his soil.
