In a nutshell, connect all a/v sources (dvd, satellite, cable box) to the receiver, then the receiver a/v output to your TV.

Now, all you need to do is select the appropriate input for the source you want to watch from the receiver, and it will route all audio and video signals to your TV.

The video and audio quality will depend on the cables being used, and the connections you have between all the equipment.

Digital audio (5.1 or more channels, best sound) will use coaxial or optical cables.

Standard 2 channel stereo sound will be red and white RCA jacks

Lowest quality video (vhs like) is called composite video, it is a single yellow RCA jack.

Good video will be called S-video. It is a 4-pin mini-DIN. Couple this with the standard red and white RCA cables for audio or digital for audio.

Better (also support HD) video will be called Component Video. It consists of 3 RCA jacks, red, blue and green for video. Audio can be red and white RCA's or digital (coaxial, optical).

Best will be DVI or HDMI. HDMI will support high definition video and digital audio in one cable. DVI will support high definition video, but require separate audio.

Choose the appropriate connections to get the best audio video required for your equipment.:)

Hopefully at the very least your HD TV and HD satellite have HDMI. Connect Directly.
I am guessing Receiver and DVD Do not have HDMI.
Connect DVD to receiver input, Receiver Output to TV. Best connection Possible out of receiver. Refer to HVAC888's Post for Cable Qualities Order.
The TV should have an Audio out, Programmable to be Fixed Output or Variable(Volume Control)This will be used for the HD stuff to go through Receiver.
