2 year old Whirlpool 40 gallon gas water heater shut down.
Troubleshooting guide says "replace gas control valve/thermostat"
Whirlpool no help.
Model N40T91-403

What is the warranty on the heater? Quite honestly, I have never seen a gas valve fail in that short time. Thermocouple or thermopile perhaps.

There is a 9 year warranty, but Whirlpool won't even talk to me because they think the heater is in a wrong location (bedroom cabinet)
I had another heater installed there by a licensed plumber for 15 years previously.
I don't think it's valve/thermostat myself, but I don't feel comfortable messing with gas.
Guess I have to pay a plumber to check it out.

Unless it being in the BR closet is a code violation and for that reason they won't fix, they have no basis to deny. Find out who does their warranty repair in your area and contact them. Who installed this one?

It's in a BR closet with a vent pipe out the roof where another WH was previously located for 15 years. I installed this one myself Dec. 2013
Whirlpool says it's a code violation, won't even talk to me, bastards.

Make them quote the code, go from there. Codes are specific to location, some use 1 code, some others. Some use UPC-Universal Plumbing Code, some, like here in GA, use IPC-International Plumbing Code. Remember, codes are minimum. Any locale can make their own code as long as it is equal to or better than the standard code. Is this closet used for anything else?

The closet is used for storage, junk, old clothing and stuff.
It's not loaded, there is ample free space.

Called Whirlpool again and asked for an explanation.
I was told that they are going by the National Gas Fuel Code and that my Water Heater should not be in a closet and my warranty was voided.
I guess I'm screwed.

There are plenty of Gas HW heaters in closets. I can tell you that a closet for a hot water heater must be dedicated, no other storage. Does this heater have the new intake air safety?

Thanks for all your help.
I think I am up and running again without new parts.
Was able to reset the pos Honeywell circuit board thanks to a website called
Tyler Tork | Fictioneer (http://www.tylertork.com)
Go to : Resetting the #$%@! * Honeywell Gas Valve...
Thanks a lot.

If this has the Smart burner, make very sure the side air ports are open. Most have a series of small holes and they sometimes get clogged with lint and debris.

Are you talking about the circular disk slightly bigger than the burner just below the burner?
