I have a roar in my left ear that is the pounding of my heart. No problem with right ear. Noise is awaking me up at night and continues through the day.

You are aware of your PULSE. Your arteries are the blood vessels that have a pulse, as they are the ones going away from the pumping heart to all parts of your body. (Then veins bring the blood back, with a much weaker pulse.)
There could be many reasons that you sense a pulse in your ear. A congested ear might be one. Tissues are swollen from mucous or possibly infection (but that would hurt). The swelling amplifies the sound of your arteries.
But if it's waking you up out of sleep, please see a doctor. Blood vessels can get balloons in them (aneurysm, serious) or you could have a low grade ear or even gum infection that doesn't hurt yet - too many guesses to say here.

Sounds like you have fluid behind your eardrum. You need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
