When you say it leaks, leaks to where?

Can you post a photo of your drain ?

Usually, you put Plumber's Putty under the flange. Here is the installation process:

You put put bead of Putty under the flange ( upper part of shower drain) , insert it into the hole - then go under the shower pan, insert Rubber Gasket over the protruding threaded drain first, paper gasket goes in second - then screw in the nut.

Tighten the nut against the pan. It will squeeze out the excess of Putty around the flange on top. Pick up excess of Putty and you are finished.

Some use Silicone instead of Plumber's Putty under the flange. Same process as with Putty. With Silicone, you have to clean excess with Alcohol and let dry as per manufacturer's recommendations. Make sure both surfaces are clean before you apply Silicone.

Hope that helps
