Your friend (and you) can go to the DMV (if in the US) and your friend, can request a lost title, (if they are indeed the legal owner) Once they get the lost title, then can then sign it over to you.

You are not the registered legal owner on the title, so you can not get the lost title.

If the seller was cheating you, you may have a law suit against them for the price of the car, if they can not produce the title.

How did you register it without a title? First mistake was handing over cash to someone other than a dealer that did not have the title in hand to sign over to your at that moment.
