Hi! First time Posting!
I'll try and be as "Specific" as I can about this Problem.
I also, thank you all merely for taking your time to simply read this, and hopefully answer back. I just want to thank you, before I even write any further, as I value and respect anyone's time taken to help another person! So Thank you : )
For the last few week's I've been helping my Father try and get his
"Empire DV-55SPP Wall Heater" to run again.
From what he's told me:
When he bought the unit from someone, it functioned properly.
When he installed it in his home it worked for one winter.
Now as winter is approaching again, and its getting cold.
We've been very unsuccessful in our attempts to try and solve this problem.
My father has been a welder for many years of his life, and is quite knowledgeable on the subject of various gases, and compressed gases, and the safety and hazards of working with them, But alas he is not a propane technician.
I also have a very basic working knowledge of "wiring", and reading schematics...
But dealing with anything "Combustible" is usually where I draw the line...
I've downloaded the correct manual off Empires website and we've been up and down it. Through the trouble shooting guide.
(The last few weeks via Google, I've gotten a Good education, on Thermocouples, Thermopiles and Thermostats)
So the DV 55 SPP, is hooked up to a 100lb Propane Tank ground level, Copper piping, runs up the side of the building to the 2nd Floor, where it comes into the DV-55SPP Unit...
Following the instructions, my Father can Light the Pilot, and hold down the button, and the pilot stays lit.
Even letting off the Pilot, the flame weakens, but it stays lit.
It only seems, when he goes to (Sorry for lack of a better phrase here)
Activate it? Turn the pilot on, only then does the pilot go out.
He also has no thermostat at the moment wired to it, he had tied off the wires electrically, and rigged it to some sort of switch so he could complete the Circuit.
(Actually, he wired it well, why he didn't wire the thermostat in I'm not quite sure.. )
At this point though, he's pretty sure, its something electrical, we've gone over all the wires, and did find one melted/flattened one, which we changed out with the correct grade wiring mentioned in the manual, also comparing the schematic from the manual to Ours, different "Colored" wires, seem to not be in correct places...
Though we have cleaned out the unit, he has tried touching one of the wires to the terminal, in the manner the manual suggests, and it does spark, showing that electricity is going to it.
At this point, like I mentioned, I know nothing about Propane, and pressurized gases, so I'm not 100% sure, if he has everything hooked up correctly...
But oddly, not at any point can we "Smell gas"... Not even a little... Though the pilot lights...
My father thinks, its probably the electric (wiring)
So were on the precipice of calling a technician...
Though I'm not sure what the going rate for that is...
So I guess my question would be... Should we throw in the towel, and call someone to come look at it?
Or was there something mentioned (or something I was not specific on enough above) that someone might have a suggestion?
I can also supply pictures taken from my phone...
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
