I received a ticket for shoplifting at the mall. No arrest, just a fine. Otherwise completely clean record. I'm 41 and have children who I take to the mall for clothes shopping, etc. I was banned for a year. Seems pretty harsh to me. Value of the items were $80. I was completely and totally cooperative with security and police. Is there anyone at the mall I can speak to and ask for a lighter ban or is there no recourse at all.

They gave you a break. You should be grateful you are not in jail charged with theft. A 41 year old should KNOW better.
Good luck talking to a mall manager, or security, to lighten your already LIGHT "harsh" punishment.

This is the consequence to your actions. Be grateful you weren't arrested.
Now your children have to suffer because of the bad choice you made.
Sorry, but you deserve this punishment. It's much lighter than what you could have been subjected to.
The worst part is that now you have to explain to your children why you can't take them to the mall for a year. Hopefully they will learn from your mistake.

You caught "a break" buddy. Count your lucky stars you did not get locked up fingerprinted, mug shot. How did you get a fine with no arrest and no record? If you were lucky enough to pull that off you are double lucky. Don't cry about the ban, suck it up and be happy.

Given that your ban is conditional (on you staying away), chances are good that your status is conditional in all respects, meaning they could press changes instead.
For the last 10 years or so, restitution is far more than the return of the items or the cost of the items. Usually several hundreds of dollars are added to cover legal costs.
Which would you prefer, ban for a year, or paying about $700 and having a record?
You seem unaware of your situation, thinking your punishment harsh. Only $80 is what you were CAUGHT stealing. No one in the world ever believes that the time someone is caught is their first and only time (even when it it). Banning makes perfect sense.

Pretty harsh? You were lucky! While it is unlikely you would have gone to jail you could have had a criminal record. In my opinion you got off lightly. Shop at a different mall.

This is what is wrong with society today.

I agree, no doubt this is the first time that he was caught. He gets a slap on the hand and then cries about his punishment. His punishment should have been something that he would remember for a very long time, like years. Such as a fine of say 2,000 dollars for his first offense.

Oh poor thing... Maybe you would have rather gone to jail and spent thousands in fines?
You got off easy with a slap on the wrist and you aren't happy with that?
Find another place to shop for the next year... it clear YOU don't see the seriousness in what you did, and are indignant and ungrateful that THEY gave you a very light punishment. Lets hope next time they throw the book at you. Because it may be the first time you got caught..its extremely unlikely it was the only time you shoplifted.
