I had a positive drug test for Codeine and the result was 47ng/mL but I have never taken that drug. What can cause this? I had the further testing done because I denied taking the drug and that was still the result. I am beside myself because I don't know what could cause this. Is this a very low reading that could be caused by Poppy Seeds? Please help!

Do you have friends that use, and are you in contact with them, in their home and so on?

NOPE! I don't know anyone in that circle anymore.

I've been clean for almost 8 years and have had monthly urine tests with no use then this- I'm shocked and baffled! The only thing that I now know could cause the positive result is poppy seeds. Is the value 47ng/mL a low value?

Did they take new samples ? Or merely retest the old Sample? I am thinking either lab mix up or a cross contamination at the testing place or lab. I do not know what your lab testing would consider passing and failing. We eat poppy seeds, poppy leaves, and I often have poppies in the house. That should not cause the failure.

Some experts have said that liver disease or kidney issues also things some Antibiotics, Coca oil (banned in the US), and Diabetes.

Also, most US money have traces on it, If you handle a lot of money, you may also come across some money that has heavy coating of drug residue.

The testing was done at my treatment center and the old sample was retested. I gave a saliva and urine sample when they called me in about the positive test and both came back negative. That doesn't matter to them though, 7 years clean means NOTHING! I'm trying to find out if my level is very low but I can't seem to find that out. They said my new samples wouldn't have the drug anyway as its passed quickly. I'm just so upset and at a loss! I've taken my sobriety VERY seriously and now I'm starting all over again with them.

Not sure why this matters.

To the OP, have you taken any medications recently? Some medications do have codeine as one of their ingredients.

In regards, to the level of 47 ng/mL that is a low level. The urine dip test I sell are set at 300 ng/mL. One thing you might do is contact an MRO. A Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a doctor trained to interpret drug test results and give a determination of what could have interfered with the test. They have an association web site of aamro.com. You can search for an MRO in your area. I have no affiliation with the site.

A couple of thing to keep in mind. Did the treatment center lab have you sign the seal that went over the specimen container? Did you fill out a chain of custody form? Did they do a GC/MS confirmation test to confirm the positive result? Has the lab's equipment been properly maintained to maintain it's accuracy? Maybe your sample was mixed up with some other person's sample, that's why you have chain of custody and seals on specimen containers.
